    Make sure is getting fuel
Make sure your plug is grand. Clean it up etc. If not replace it

Lawnmower should get a service once a year.

    Will cost you about €40

Take out the plug and pour half an egg cup of petrol straight into the cylinder. Replace the plug and try starting it. If it fails to start your problem is with the spark. If it starts and doesn't keep going after the petrol you put in burns off its fuel starvation more than likely a blocked jet.

I have a 25 year old Briggs and Stratton powered mower that stood outside unused for about 4 years. I wiped the spark plug clean, squirted some WD40 onto the ends of the HT lead, put in some fresh petrol and proceeded to haul on the starter chord on the basis that it was essentially a free mower if it did work. After about 10 minutes it coughed and about another ten pulls on the chord later it started in a cloud of smoke. I have been using it for the last four years and the only thing it ever needs is petrol.

There is very little to a mower engine so check that the HT lead is connected properly at both ends, clean the plug, check the fuel and oil levels, set the control lever to choke and haul on the chord. It may take a good few pulls before you get a result but, assuming everything else is ok, you should get it running.

Oh, and if you still have it, read the manual as there is usually a startup procedure with fault finding tips.

Take out the spark plug and hold it over the gas ring of the gas cooker until it is glowing red hot, quickly take it outside and screw it back in, pull the cord a few times and once petrol vapour comes into contact with the glowing plug it should fire, I have done this several times and had it work with various degrees of success. Worst plan was the time I sprayed eazystart for a diesel engine into the air intake and blew the engine in a strimmers to kingdom come.

Put a small bit of petrol in the filter box( the sponge part). I did it to mine.

Is this not a little dodgy doing this, its a possibility that the fuel may ignite alone by the heat of the plug and not by the spark and cause the engine to back fire or cause pre-ignition?

If it has the carburettor with the diaphragm under it, it could well be perished so has gone hard and not sucking the fuel up.
