Mac OS X, Version 10.2.8. Memory 254MB, Processor: 900 MHz PowerPC G3 *bought in Japan*

As you can see this is an old machine, but in good nick. It's just not worth spending money on it as it would cost too much to get online etc. I thought I could install XP or a linux flavour, but no go. So, I was wondering if anyone was interested in it for spare parts.

    Thanks,
    grasshopper

    PowerPC G3

The answer is in the question, Grasshopper!

Maybe something like this would work.

Dont close your eyes to the possibilities.

Thank you for your reply. What an interesting possibility. I'm not the greatest on the cl, but it certainly would be an interesting challenge and a good learning experience. Will let you know how it goes.

I assume this is the model you have which should work with any ppc live CD.
Your request sparked an interest and since I had an even older G3, I decided to experiment.
I tried booting into the following live CDs: Finnex(ppc) v1.04 & v0.92, Ubuntu v5.1, Debian(ppc) v3.1r0a and a few other non unix CDs. No joy on any of them. Then I checked and discovered that this is an 'Old World' model. 'Old world' Macs require Quik to boot so no live CD will work. To get get my model to work I would have to use the downloads available here ( bottom of page).

Its all here and explains why I had problems. I haven't done any of this since I am happy I have the solution to the problem

Or to put it another way.

    Hi grasshopper
If your project doesn't get off the ground I would be interested in it for spare parts if your still inclined. Essentially Ive been promised a g3 should have it in a week or so but the motherboard is fried in it. this just might get me up and running.
Not techie orientated so friend helping out to get me up and running on a mac want to move from PC TO MAC permanently.
