Commuting Dublin to Athlone - where to live?

Ok so story is herself got a new job in Dundrum and I work in athlone. I plan on commuting to work everyday. Tbh I don't mind this too much as I had been commuting from Galway daily before this.

The big question is where to live to considering she has to get to dundrum and me to athlone? Somewhere like Lucan was my first thoughts but I think where it might be ok for me, getting to dundrum every moring could be a pain plus I think I would like to be abit closer to the city and maybe a Lucas line if possible just for going out in the evenings/weekends etc. So my attentions have moved to maybe somewhere like Kilmainhaim or maybe somewhere close to the M50, Templeouughe, maybe even dundrum or sandyford. But I really want to keep the commute to as close to 1 hour 15 min as possible.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. :)

Is that practical on an everyday commute basis? where else do you go - shopping, nights out, visiting, doctor, etc.

Potentially you could live somewhere such that one party could walk/bus/Luas/train to work.

    Possibilities
    * Dundrum - one walks to work, the other drives on the motorway against the main flow of traffic.
    * Ranelagh/Rathmines - one gets Luas to work, the other drives on the canal-Naas Road-motorway against the main flow of traffic.
    * Heuston Station - one gets bus/Luas to work, the other drives on the N4/motorway against the main flow of traffic or gets the train.

Thanks Victor, whether its practical or not only time will tell I guess. I'm willing to try it for a year and see how things go. The journey doesn't bother me at all, just it's not going to be cheap (diesel, tolls, etc) however hopefully I can suss out other people at work who travel from Dublin and carpool, when I was travelling from Galway I rounded up afew to do this and it was a great saving.

I presume those places you mentioned I will always be going against the traffic flow (leaving at 7:30am and coming back at 6pm) so being stuck in traffic jams shouldn't be a problem?

Much less of a problem, no guarantees. :)

Templeogue/Firhouse could be an option - 75 bus to/from Dundrum and close to M50.
