Best place to get a student loan

    Hi all,

I'm doing my second degree at the moment (not eligible for grant, assistance BTEA or anything like that, I think) and my college fees for 2012-2013 are over €5000 euro - €2950 for the course and €2250 for registration.

Where is the best place to get a loan? Who's giving the best rates?

I'm working part time so I could pay off a small amount every week.

    Thanks for any replies.

    Hi there. :)
I assume you are doing a second degree of the same level yeah? If not, you could apply for some grants like SAF, maintenance etc.

I've been told that the credit union are great for loans and are more likely to give you one if you already have an account and can put money in regularly.

I'll be heading off to uni next year and will be looking into loans as a safety measure. Will get back to you if I find anything particularly decent. :)

Yep, another level 8. I'll head down to the SWO and look into those. I thought the Credit Union would be a good place too, but I heard they've recently cracked down on offering loans. Can't hurt to ask I suppose, especially if I start putting all my saving in with them.

Thanks for your help, if I find anything that looks good I'll report back too.

    saf = student assistance fund?

why could you not get btea longhalloween? was it case you were denied or that you were ineligible due to amount of days/not unemployed?

I have a level 7, going back to do a level 8 and seeing what i can do to basically just afford it.

If you don't mind letting me know how you get on with the swo be appreciated

I don't think i can apply to SAF until after college starts and I'm working at the moment so BTEA is out of the question.

As far as I've learned I'm on my own regarding government assistance. Though in the grand scheme of things €5k is nothing compared to the wages I'll be likely to earn when I'm finished. I'm just looking for the best rates at this stage.

    Thanks for the reply

I presume you know it but you can claim tax relief on fees, i think it only amounts to 800 euro roughly for 5k fees.

    Good luck!
