Chiminea care

Hey guys, I just picked up a small pottery chiminea for the garden yesterday. The instructions mentioned "curing" the chiminea with a few small fires and to cover it. That made me wonder about wet pottery and hot fires leading to cracking. We're usually pretty relaxed about covering our patio furniture and I don't even have a cover for the chiminea yet.

For regular chiminea users, is this a concern? What do you do?

Also can I burn peat briquettes in it?
