    a good article about handicapping
    http://www.ukbettips.co.uk/other-information/1715-handicaps.html

As for ground conditions - some horses cope with soft better than others - breeding is the key so if you see a horse with only places and wins on good or fast ground running on soft then you can probably avoid that one (this isn't foolproof of course as the horse could be just a better horse that's well drawn and so could do better than expected)

draw bias is something that varies from track to track and race to race depending on its design and length - a race can be run on a straight (as many sprints are) but also could take in many turns as on a tight oval track over say 2 miles.

I've read a lot of books on the subject but this one really covers a lot in great detail.
Braddock's Complete Guide to Horse Race Selection and Betting
It covers everything. It's heavy on information but you can flick to whichever section you wish.
Available from a penny on Amazon (+P&P).

Or have a look here for some online video guides which may be helpful.
