Nvidia - Degraded Array

    Hi folks,

Lately I have been getting a degraded array message on boot up.
I have two WD raptors set up in Raid 1 configuration (PC is an XPS720H2C).

If I hit CRTL+N on start up to enter the raid configuration screen, and rebuild the array will I loose any data? I searched on google for this, but I'm still not sure if it deletes the data or not.

Is there a way to check and see if one of the drives has actually failed?

    Cheers

Is there's no indication in the RAID configuration screen which drive has caused the array to become degraded?

The screen shows 'Degraded' for sata 0 and 1

Does it still boot up and work okay? If so then one of the drives is okay so I'd backup what you can and go ahead and rebuild.

Yeah, booting up and working fine.
It shows the raid degraded screen for a few seconds, but then continues to boot to login as normal.

Does a rebuild with the two original drives wipe all data?

Could it be a case of one of the drives corrupt and so lost the mirror?

Disconnect one of the disks and reboot. If it boots O.K. and all your data is there then that drive is O.K. Repeat with the other drive. If both are O.K. then just rebuild the array.

If one is not O.K. then boot from the other and rebuild making sure you are building from the good disk.

Even if the array rebuilds correctly I would get a new drive as the problem could have been caused by the disk beginning to fail as opposed to a corrupt write.

I disconnected the drives in turn and found that both drives booted up OK. However, index 1 had more free space showing and when I checked my emails, the last one was from a few days ago. Index 0 is up to date with more data/emails etc.

I hit CTRL+N on boot up and tried to rebuild the array from index 0, but it didn't start rebuilding.
I have the following options for each index...
    R - rebuild
    D - delete
    C - clear MBR

Do I need to delete index 1 before rebuilding it?
The drives have about 50gig on them, so how long does a rebuild take?

Thanks for all the help so far !
