I ran my first 10k yesterday :) (Great Limerick Run), felt great afterwards but a few hours after I felt quite unwell and I've put it down to how much water/energy drinks I drank after it.. probably a litre within an hour or less of it..

So my question is, what's recommended, how to pace out drinks/eating etc. after a run?

A peanut (no sugar) and banana sambo on 6 grain bread. Sports drink, even dilute it them down. Drinking a drink with around 7% carbs makes the body absorb it easier. The main reason why sports drinks are better than water. I would use one after a race but not everyday as I would be poor.

Dilute the energy drinks to 50% energy drink/ 50% water. If you drink it without diluting it you'll get dehydrated.

Bananas are good. I basically just eat whatever I can after a race.

After a race the thing I try to eat is whatever is available at the after race spread, and as much as I can! :D
Seriously you shouldn't have to worry about eating too much after a 10k, just a banana and a bit of water until you feel you can handle more. But the more you race, the less of an issue this will become and you be more like the rest of us, heading straight for the free food after the race!

just don't drink too much too fast afterwards.

or else you can find yourself bent over the bowl. (i don't have the medical facts as to why )

once you run more you'll lrean what you can handle.

i advise bring out a water bottle/belt with you. i run 15km most nights and find that the water belt (with 2 half litre bottles) really helps.

also.... a wine-gum for every 5km i run while im out there is a nice treat!! :):)

Sure you wouldn't need food after that little dash. ;)

While I didn't get sick, there were a couple times where I thought I might! So yeah I think I know how to handle it next time!

After a LSR or race, I'm all about the chocolate milk. Well, I used to be until I gave up chocolate for Lent and now I am absolutely evangelical about coffee milk (http://www.mammothsupply.co.nz/#iced_coffee). It truly is the elixir of life.
