clipless pedals - tension too tight?

fell off the bike the other night in the wet ( too fast round a corner - let that be a lesson to me). anyway no harm done but i'm just wondering, since my right foot stayed clipped in, if that means the tension is too tight on the pedal? i was in a bit of a panic for a few seconds as i couldn't get it unclipped and was stuck on a bend in the road. are your feet meant to come unclipped if you crash / fall off or does it matter?

It depends on the crash really. For me, i've always come unclipped, but if your sliding with the bike the force trying to separate you wouldn't be that high compared to say rear ending a car :(

But if your worried open em up a little and just make sure your can't pull them out next time your sprinting to the sign post :D

What kind of pedals are they? If they're SPDs, I'd adjust their tension so they're at their loosest, no need to have them any tighter for road biking unless you're doing hard racing up climbs. I have them on loosest binding and they've never unclipped unintentionally on me. If they're SPD-SL/Look Keo, I don't think there's an option for that.

Just practice unclipping. Even with tension set at its highest it should not be too difficult to unclip when you wish to - you should reach the stage where unclipping becomes second nature

I was chatting with some of the club about this. Its funny, at first I was afraid going out with my feet clipped in and now I end up terrified of slipping off if I'm on platforms

Bren, if they're Look pedals, play around with an Allan key on the back of the pedal.
You should be able to hop out easily. Maybe it's too tight.
Yeah. Tension is most likely the issue there.
    Drop of oil etc.

    Been there.

thanks everyone. i'm using spd-sl - they do have a tension adjustment so i'll turn it down a notch or two. (Planet X - think you have me mixed up with another Bren?)
