Another Processor Upgrade

I'm back to ye again. My father is looking to upgrade the processor in his laptop. I'm just wondering what would be the best processor available to him.

    Specs are:

Dell Precision M90 with Windows XP Professional

    Intel Core 2 T7200 @2Ghz

    3.25gb Ram

I think it has the Intel 945 chipset but I'm not sure.

The laptop is nearly 6 years old at this stage so I'm not expecting a miracle but he uses it for video editing so any upgrade would be beneficial.

    Thanks

while I suppose it would technically be feasible to upgrade a CPU in a laptop, it's nothing I would recommend trying to do, as you'd have to take the entire thing apart, and put it back together again. Assuming you know how to do it, it's an operation that would take you hours upon hours. Assuming you don't, it's going to cost you more for the parts and labor than the laptop is worth. Far more. Plus any compatible CPU assuming you can still find one (...good luck) will only give you a marginal increase in performance.

At 6 years old, it's time to replace the entire laptop if you're looking to upgrade.

I replaced the processor in my laptop last week in 10 minutes.I found it to be a very easy job even though it was my first time doing it.I just had to take off the heatsink and change in the processor.

Depends on the laptop then. Mine would take hours just to reach the CPU.

Cutting the labor aside, you have to first find a processor that is both faster, and will fit in your socket type. In my experience that means you're looking for some legacy part on ebay which is either used and dirt cheap, or ludicrously expensive. fun fact: http://www.upgradebay.com/c1_itemdetail.asp?rid=22&itemid=169447172 <--- that equates to $530,841.60 per gigabyte of RAM. Which is why, if you need a new one, you might just be better off replacing the PC!
