Just got word that Barry Minnock ran 2.17.40 ish in the Hanover Marathon this morning. He set out to run only 25K as a preparation for Copenhagen. He felt fine and continued on.

Fantastic! Are marathons the new training sessions? :D

Well done Bazman. Will he still run Copenhagen?

Just thinking the same. 20th May. Not a lot of recovery time.

    Probably :)
I think he's going to head over anyway.

Got a text about this result and had to look twice. Great running (talk about stating the obvious :))

Saw this on facebook earlier and wondered if he'd actually done it in a race. Sounded like he'd just been out on a training run and decided to lob on a few extra ks. Great running bazman. Copenhagen should be a great one.

Congrats. Is that a Boards.ie "record"?

    He was 8th overall!

I hate to be the "don't do it" voice, but unless Baz had loads left after Hannover (which I can't imagine he did after such a run), I hope he skips it to regroup and aim for the next achievement! Getting into proper international elite territory now, so no point in doing another marathon just for the sake of doing it and knocking his recovery for six.

    What a performance!

Was wondering what the plan was myself. I wonder was MP the A standard. I think he was off the A standard at the half way mark so maybe his MP was 2.18 or similar. Can understand why he'd have a go in Copenhagen but will be very hard to do I'd imagine. Would be some story if he managed it, Hollywood stuff. Best of luck anyway.

From all reports he seemed to knock out that 2:17 with lots left in the tank. Cant wait to see how he gets on on the 20th. Like his stlye, very much the dark horse.

Looking at splits he seemed to slow in second half. Maybe the man will let us know himself. Hint hint nudge nudge Bazman :)

He ruled out a run in Copenhagen on facebook today. Sensible in my view. What a run in Hanover tho, his improvement gives encouragement to the rest of us.Shows what hard work an belief can do.

Thanks for the thread messages guys.

There isn't a master plan, but will try to clarify my thinking - my head is typically all over the place, so it's not going to be crystal clear :)

Hannover was original plan, but felt I left myself short a couple of long runs in prep. Heard Dick Hooper was heading over to Copenhagen with Barabra Sanchez so decided to add 2 extra prep weeks. Also, Copenhagen were v v supportive re elite entry, accomodation etc. By the time I made this decison I had flights, car, hotel all prepaid for Hannover to get cheap rates. Since it was all paid I went over to Hannover with intension of final marathon prep week.

I'm pushing on now age wise, so I decided to run Hannover to 30k at A standard pace to see if I was anyway close to making major champs. I expected to blow completely by running this pace. The 30k point was 1k from my hotel, so nice jog back. My pace has slowed at 30k but still felt fine, so decided to go to 35k. At 35k I was 6k from hotel & 7k to finish marathon. I knew I had slowed, but was still on for strong PB. Also knew weather conditions were perfect & I could be regretting stopping in Copenhagen as conditions there are typically v windy.

So at 35k I committed to finishing, took my one & only gel, and pressed for home. Thankfully I held it together. Actually felt fine at finish - not staying I could have went faster.

So took protein bars & cold bath at finish as that was all prepared with Copenhagen in mind. Recovery is going well, but not sure yet what I'm recovering for :) Copenhagen is v tempting - they are so so welcoming to amateur athletes & it's a potential top-3 finish in major marathon. But, I know my body well & will listen to it - at the moment it's 50/50.

    Surprising things about Hannover were:
    - didn't taper: 5x2k on Wed before, 10x200m on Fri, 1x1k on Sat (carb loading thing)
    - didn't need much fluids/nutrition in race (had loaded SIGNIFICANTLY beforehand - will detail in blog in time, but it included depletion)
    - ran completely solo - think this helped as always ran my own pace & although there was a slight wind, it was nothing like Ireland can be
    - weather so important - it was cool, which meant I hardly was sweating at all - top dry at finish
    - so important to have cool conditions so if looking for time
    - no pressure on run helped - v few knew I was running, I was solo & was v prepared to pull plug if necessary. For elites looking for time, I think a plan B marathon is a good idea

4 races in 4 weeks :) Great Ireland 10k, Road Relays, Samsung Night Run, Hannover! Top class performances in each, capped off by fantastic run in Hannover! Well done sir!

How was your prep for Dublin last year? 2.18 in Dublin is bloody quick!
