Is this a fair price for building a garden wall?

I got a price from my builder of €1950 to build the following...

A 7 foot 9" Cavity Wall with 2 peers. Lenght is 7.5 metres. It is a wall in my back garden, currently there is a fence there.

Is this a fair price? It seems like a ripoff to me? The thing is this builder is building an extension for me in my back garden at the moment and I would prefer him to build the wall too. He started last week and has dug out the foundations, concrete will be poured on Tuesday.

If I could get a cheaper price on the wall from another builder do you think it would be feasible to have them building the wall at the same time as my builder is doing the extension? Would this be a bad idea?

Of course when I mentioned to the builder that I would look for someone else to get a better price he said even if I got a better price they probably wouldn't dig as deep foundations as he would or do as good a job. Beginning to think this sounds like 'builder psychology' to put doubt in my mind that someone else could do just as good a job as him:confused:

    Cheer for any feedback!

is that price materials and labour?
digger for 2 hours or maybe doing it by hand, skip to get rid of clay and existing fence. 200

for foundations if his is putting in at depth of 300mm and 900 wide 2 1/2 metres cubed of concrete at 60 a meter plus small load charge 200

in that size of wall there will be about 200 blocks dont know about price but imagine they will be dearer than 6 inch solid so say 1 euro a piece. 200 euro for blocks.(personally i would prefer wall to be built of 4" or 6" solids on their flat, stronger wall, will not crack as easily and if easier to fix stuff onto)

    9 wall cappings @ 7 euro each 63

sand 6 tonne (for building and plastering each side)@ 28.50 tonne 170

    cement 30 bags @5 each 150

coner bead for plastering 8 lengths @5 each 40

so just over 1000 euro for materials

so asuming two men each day. 1 day remove fence, dig foundations and pour them.2. build wall and scud 3.cap wall, scratch and put on corner beading 4. finish coat and tidy up

    4 days at 200 a day
total around 1800 so id say that price would be realistic

    +1.

People always under estimate the cost of building garden/boundary walls (properly). They seem to forget that thy need foundations (the top of which should be min. 450mm below ground level) so consequently you have quite a bit of blockwork underground as well.

@ Dupont, the price does include materials and labour so I guess it is realistic, thanks a million for breaking it down, makes me feel a lot better now, I will probably go with my own builder now. Thanks again, it's VERY much appreciated!!!

Make sure for that price that he is plastering both sides.

@ caseywhale, it's a garden wall mate so it won't be plastered.

Why? The price has already been broken down and shown to be reasonable.

In that breakdown it looks to me like plastering is in it too.

exactly, would it not make more sense to take out the price of him plastering and ask for the price to be lowered? or ask him to plaster it aswell.
