Most unusual helicopter just spotted over cootehill, county cavan . Looked like a Bell407 . Travelling quite slowly, quite high, 3-4,000' turned over head us and returned westward . However, the really unusual thing was there appeared to be a pod, hanging on the right hand side of the aircraft, looked for all the world like those stretcher pods they used to have on the sides of bell 47s during the Korean war . Any one got an idea what it was

It's probably a utility basket mounted on the pilot side of the Heli,

It was probably one of PDGs Squirrels.

its the fbi checking out rumours of a cavan man buying a round (joking)

i'd imagine its aerial survey they have cargo baskets out the side with surveying equipment

Possibly an Airborne Laser Scanner fitted, not a basket.

You are hallucinating, a gentleman in a dark suit will be calling to you presently. You will cooperate.

On the other hand, I did see something that look like a Jolly Green HH53 over Galway the other day. But most likely it was the new IRCG S92 out training. At least that's what the nice black American guy in black said who called to my door.

Was that Tuesday by any chance xflyer? I was confined to the leaba with a bug but I got up and about later in the day and about 5 or 6 PM I heard something that sounded like a multi-engined turboprop passing nearby. I thought it might have been the DC3 or the Cesna that do survey work out and about but perhaps it was the S92 instead. Certainly didn't sound like a heli.

Probably Tuesday, most likely the S92 out training. It doesn't sound very helicopter like in comparison to others.

That could well be it then! Just seemed so unusual to have an aircraft overhead in Galway now the airport is no more.
