Was thinking about buying around a 03 or 04 golf, just a standard Tdi, i dont want any red di or red i to keep down insurance costs. Anyway I was wondering would a golf van be cheaper to tax and insure than a golf car as i am an under 20 male and this would be my first car? any idea what prices i am looking at for insurance with full license?

Well the one to ask there is certainly the insurance company. All youll get here is opinions not facts. The tax situation with vans has also become more complicated and i suggest you check that one out with the tax office. Sometimes you need documentary evidence to say you need the van for your business etc. My advice stick to the cars :D

I'd advise to stick with the car.

Though, looking at your post I am guessing you want the car to get to A to B and you don't care much about speed etc.

In that case I would consider the whole range of cars from 1998 to 200whenever they stopped the mark 4. The older and less powerful models had the more reliable engine in my opinion.

I was lucky to find a gem of a 2000 Golf with great paintwork and interior. The 90hp engine has been a tank and the only expensive things have been replacing the odd bit and bob due to the age of the car. Maybe you would prefer the younger cars in that place.

Look out for the Octavia as that is the same car (more Bora but they are all the same wagon) aside from drum brakes on the rear and a couple of other things.

Insurance wise, I was quoted the same for the 150 HP TDI as I was the 90 HP consistently across all insurance companies. It is either the 90HPers are getting ripped off by 150HP insurance or 150HPers are getting a steal with 90HP insurance.

a 03-04 golf will be the last of the mk4 range and will be the pd tdi engine. there are 100,115,130 and 150 bhp engines. try get a standard one and not one that is classed as a gt-tdi on the log book. insurance companies love hearing gt and young male in one sentance! more cash for them!

nobody here can give you a quote, you are just going to have to ring every insurance company and broker you can. if you are on a learners permit and have no driving experience some companys may refuse to quote you on anything more than a 100bhp one.

if you have no means of taxing a van commercial you are as well off with a car. even if you can tax it commercial you are only meant to use it for work and not going to the shop/cinema etc etc
