Currently have a peugeot carbolite 103 framed fixie for commuting (took it as a trade in on a car I sold at the beginning of the year), and can't help but think I'd be better off with a geared commuter.

My question is whether it is worth spending money on returning it to a geared road bike, or am I better off just selling it and buying something that fits the above description?

If you do sell it, I'd be very interested.

If it's purely financial, you'd be looking to buy a full groupset and at least a back wheel? Then brakes etc? While at the same time I think you'd be able to get better value bike for a little more? (after you have the funds fromselling it that is)

It really depends on what it's worth in its current form? If it wasn't worth much, it probably wouldn't be worth my while selling it. I do like the look of the steel frame...

I have been pricing up a few bits and pieces and if I was to go with all new sora components and get new bottom of the range wheels it's going to cost me in the region of €500, give or take, obviously it could be done cheaper if I was to wait for used bits and pieces to pop up. Would a modern groupset even fit on this frame?

Or how about this for a wild idea? Put a cheap sturmey archer hub on it? All you will need is a new hub, spokes and a rear brake. The bike is part way set up for it.

Has the advantage of minimal maintenance compared to any derailleur system so perfect for a commuter. Plus geared hubs are cool :D

Those old UO8s are not worth very much even in original condition as the tubset is very basic (very strong though, they make good touring hacks...)

The hubs themselves can be gotten for buttons on Ebay. Plus they are bulletproof.

You would then need a shifter and cables. A second hand rear brake, cables and handles should be had for less then 40 quid if you look around.

I could see this converted for less then 130 quid if shop around.

Cheaper then a new sora group set and more reliable

Tbh, I don't think the frame is really worth spending that much on upgrading it. Not that's it total crap or anything, but IMHO, just not worth it. Though, I may also be protesting too much.

All food for thought, thanks for the input.

Out of interest, what would it be worth if I was to try and sell it?

probably not, although you could cold set the rear stays to accommodate the wider spacing necessary, not worth it imo

is it worth sinking 500 quid into this project? definitely not

sell as is or keep it.

About 150 to the current fixie market. Possibly more.

Though that said its a lot better then some of the shíte pedaled on adverts....

You could sell that on adverts to some deluded hipster for 250 easily, the frames in great nick from what I can see and it's all decent.

A lot of the conversions on adverts that sell for 2-300 on adverts are dodgy paint jobs with dirt cheap components thrown together by a monkey.
