Voip from mobiles

Just thinking about changing from Vo to o2. Vo has a Simply 100 deal (supposed to be €25 including VAT), which gives 100 minutes of calls to other networks and 100 texts. This has never really happened; Vo keep charging me VAT on top, which they have some perfectly good explanation for.

o2 has a business deal for around the same price, but while calls and texts to o2 and to "10 selected landlines" are free (who calls landlines?), the calls and texts to other mobile networks are costly enough - 18c and 14c a minute, which means a 10-minute call and you're up to €1.40 (+23%) on top of your basic.

Is there any way to get around this, and get cheaper calls to other cell networks? There used to be one of those Voip services that put you through to a Dublin landline number and thence to internet calling, but I can't remember its name, and they now seem to be all 1530 or 1890 or 1800 numbers, which are dear to call from a mobile.

    Have you looked at 48months?

Calls and texts to all Irish mobiles .... €10 per month.

Some landline minutes included, but not much.

    48months.ie

    Month by month 'membership'.

Appears to be the best around for those who mostly text and call mobiles.

This sounds perfect. What about data? Can you bring your number with you? Oh, wait, I'll go and look!

Edit: Oh. No internet. Later they'll have "offers" that let you "dip in and out of internet". I scent money draining away... Not that I use a lot of internet, but it's nice to be able to check a website for an address, check a map for where I am, check my email.

EditAhAon: Also, doesn't seem like you can take your phone abroad and use it atallatall.

EditEile: Their privacy stuff is a bit creepy too: "We may collect information about you from other sources, including but not limited to..." http://48months.ie/boiler-plate/privacy

It does sound like a great deal for non-connective youngsters who don't use internet, though.

Well you did not mention data in your original post ;)

    Nor roaming either :)

Yes you can 'buy data' ... but I understand it is not cheap ... then again I am not very up to date with the latest 'doings'.

The privacy stuff is standard ...... just presented in a 'tongue-in-cheek' manner ..... for the target age group it appears.

If I had a need to make lots of calls to mobiles in the month I would use 48 ...... even if it meant using a separate phone to call out and the main phone to receive calls and for a data package.

BTW ..... you can install an app on your smart phone that can make calls via VOIP when you are within Wifi range. Cost to Irish mobiles is about 10c to 12c per minute last time I checked.

I've used www.calleasy.com which has an 01 number. Rates to any Irish mobile are 10.7c (VAT incl.) at any time of day.

Generally, their quality was quite good, but I haven't used them recently.

Voipcheap have a client which you download to mobile, and use over wifi or 3g. The quality is just OK,

However can be handy if abroad and need to dial landline, Irish or otherwise , just pop into nearest free wi fi zone
