Wi-Fi Adaptor causing interference with computer

I'm noticing that randomly, I seem to be getting interference from the wi-fi adaptor on my computer. It seems to be happening when playing games (though this may be coincidence).
    • I get buzzing from the audio- it's consistent; every second or two, I get a buzz sound and then silence.
    • The mouse freezes in sync with the buzzing.
    • Computer screen also freezes in sync with the buzzing.

As soon as I disable the device, I get no problems.
Anyone experience this and more importantly anyone got any solutions.

    :(

What brand? Have you also tried the usual, updating Adaptors drivers, using Windows to manage networks etc?

Logilink. There are no driver updates available on their website. The windows drivers have also had no effect.
In terms of letting windows manage the network, I'm not sure I understand. I now, I'm not using any software that came with the logilink; it doesn't boot up any proprietary software.

Some manufacturers have their own wifi management utilities, if you are using windows to manage then that is not the issue. Have you tried different USB ports?

Sorry. I use the word adaptor when referring to the actual wifi device built into the pc.

This happens when the laptop is on AC as well as on Battery power?

Is there an external antenna connected to the card or is everything internal ? What make/model is the computer - what OS ? What does the Device Manager say about the Wifi card, i.e. model number - any conflicts etc. Is this a recent phenomenon or something that's always been there ? How far are you from your Wireless Access Point ? Are there any other wireless devices close by, i.e. Wireless Mouse/Keyboard ?

    External antenna(s)

What make/model is the computer - what OS ?
Windows 7 64-bit (up to date software). Computer is a self build. MOBO is ASROCK PRO 3 GEN3 (up to date bios)

What does the Device Manager say about the Wifi card, i.e. model number - any conflicts etc. Is this a recent phenomenon or something that's always been there ?
Logilink WL0066 Wireless PCI adapter. Issue has been there since I got the computer about a month ago. There is no driver updates available for the device. Driver version- 3.0.2.0
How far are you from your Wireless Access Point ?
Opposite corners of the house and on two different floors (obviously not ideal and the signal is fairly weak)

Are there any other wireless devices close by, i.e. Wireless Mouse/Keyboard ?
Wireless mouse, but is connected via USB at the moment.

Try reseating the wifi PCI card, even changing PCI slot

Changing the PCI slot isn't an option. While there is another slot, it's going to be night on impossible to put anything in it due to the gfx card.

I will double check and update.

I was thinking it might be a grounding issue. You say it happens while playing games which would put a lot of stress on video cards, audio system and CPU meaning more current/power consumption. Poor grounds would make themselves known in such circumstances I think. It also leaves the system open to interference from RF sources e.g. WLAN cards, Wireless Mouse/Keyboard Receivers, Bluetooth adaptors.

Another possibility is low resources, IRQs or Memory addresses. Perhaps disabling unused devices in the BIOS/UEFI ? For example if Legacy devices are still there, i.e. COM Ports, Parallel Ports, unused onboard audio/video, Unused LAN port, if there are no IDE devices present then disable the IDE system.

I was going to suggest stepping back the WLAN speed but if the signal is as weak as you suggest then it's probably operating at a lower rate already. But just as a test try sending a large file via the network to another computer while playing a DVD or playing a video file in Media-player for example. Do you get the problem occurring under these conditions ?

I've reseated the adapter in a different slot, but there is now about a milimeter between it and the GFX card fan. I'll keep an eye out, but I am concerned about temperature in that location.

In terms of disabling ports that I don't use. How would I go about finding out what ports aren't in use? Also, with regards to the grounding, how would I solve that?

For grounding make sure you've installed all the screws holding the motherboard to the case. What wattage (Watts) is your PSU by the way ?

Unused resources: If you have only used SATA devices and no IDE devices installed (IDE Hard Disk/CD/DVD Drives) then in the BIOS DISABLE IDE Interfaces. Ditto for Serial Ports and Printer/Parallel ports. I don't see any of the latter on the rear of your MOBO so not sure if they are in fact listed in the BIOS, if they are listed then disabling them should save you at least 2 or possibly 3 IRQs. If you have a separate Audio card in a PCI slot then you probably don't need the onboard Audio so you could disable that too.

Well, I've just played some half life 2 on max. I had an avi playing and an mp3 all while doing this. System didn't struggle an iota.

I did this after disabling some of the devices (via device manager) which aren't being used.

PSU is 550W, which is more than I need.

    EDIT
I checked the IRQ of the adapter with that of the GFX card and processer and the wifi adapter now has a different IRQ, where before it was the same

Just played a bit of Arkham City there and so far, since changing the adpater slot, I haven't had the issue. I'll update the thread should this change. In the mean time, thanks for the help from everyone. :)

Im having exactly the same problem. Also the best i have ever seen to got connection wise is good with the wl0066, is this normal? The internet has been terrible on my new pc and its only 1 room away from the router

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Liamario

Well, the problem has returned, but he effect on the system has definitely been reduced. I replaced the adapter into the original slot and it has the same effect (no mouse freezing, just audio buzzing intermittently).

Could this issue be caused by a weak wifi signal? All signs point to the adapter, as the issue disappears as soon as the adapter is disabled.

or 2 bad ports, or the device ****ing up the ports. either way, change out the adapter.
