Pat dry with a deep pile micro fibre cloth seems to be the current preference, if there is any debris left on the car in a gutter/channel etc, it will go into the pile of the towel and be less likely to scratch your finish, there is a greater chance that your chamois will catch and drag small particles.

That said there are plenty of people using a chamois and if you rinse it in clean water regularly, you will reduce the chance of paint damage.
