    Is it too big?

The person learning is 6 foot 5 inches tall and has trouble with the steering wheel hitting his knees in the alternative (Corsa )

Absolutely not too big. He'll get used to it in no time. Every learner takes a bit of time to get used to the size of car they are learning in. I know plenty of people who learned to drive in far larger cars than a focus without issue.

Not a myth, it's just something people get to hung up on. If you just get out there and learn in the focus, then he'll be fine. A smart car would probably be easier to move around tight situations, but this is a skill everyone needs to learn; and if there's a focus there for the taking why not?

I learned in a gen 1 focus hatch, there's not much, if any size difference and I loved that car.

I first started learning in a brand new instructors Fiesta TDCI :D, and now drive(my mothers) Focus, grand car to learn in.

Depending on the age of the Corsa the steering wheel might be able to be adjusted in height and reach. But to answer your question a Focus wouldn't be too big despite it being the saloon model.
