The purpose of RTE News Now?

I never really have understood the purpose of RTE news now.

It's just recorded news most of the time and practically no live coverage unlike channels like sky news. Infact the whole thing seems to be recorded from news bulletins.

Also Ireland's small population makes it kinda pointless, especially when you can watch news bulletins on-demand on rte player. (like 9pm news, etc...)

It's just overall pointless and has no purpose but to rebroadcast recorded news bulletins from earlier.

I never seen much live coverage as such.

Doesn't the same thing apply to having news programmes on RTE Player "It's just overall pointless and has no purpose but to rebroadcast recorded news bulletins from earlier."?

Why is broadcasting and rebroadcasting news programmes pointless?
It give people different opportunities and options to watch them.
There are plenty of people who have RTE NN on Saorview but do not have broadband, or have broadband with a usage cap so don't want to stream loads of video.

It's good for public spaces too, I've seen it on in a couple of cafes/cafeterias.

I know a few people who find it very useful, not having access to decent Broadband

It will probably evolve into a more comprehensive service in due course.

Is it not being held back by regulation? No advertising, limit on seperate programming etc. Maybe change after ASO, when in theory everyone has it.

Was watching it yeaterday for a while, they were broadcasting from the 'Morning Ireland' radio studio, dear lord it was boring (and soo bloody serious too), it was like watching a murder trial it was that serious - (give me BBC Radio 4 anyday) with up to the minute news with a bit of levity. I cant see the point in RTE "News Now" unless they actually become a News Now station!

My hope is that RTE New Now becomes more like an Irish version of BBC News 24, now that's a proper TV news station, (SKY New is too tabloid).

It shows some other programmes e.g. Prime Time. Can't see why they don't show the Oireachtas sittings on this channel TBH. There's plenty of space for it.

If only they'd improve the picture quality, maybe with the second mux

RTE NN is not allowed to advertise so it has no budget. It is not allowed to broadcast (or it doesn't anyway) original programme material. It could be used to show 'The Week in Politics' as it was recorded, or shortly afterwards. It is recorded on Sunday afternoons and excerpts are shown on the 6pm news, but it is not broadcast until after 100pm at night.

RTE NN could be a vibrant news channel showing breaking news alongside repeats of news-type programmes and documentaries. It could also be used as a training ground for wannabe news hounds.

It is an example of how RTE has ignored Saorview and intend to do so until its launch on the 25th of October 2012.

It is also an example of how the previous government left RTÉ completely hog-tied.

There are news now specific bulletins at 9, 10, 11 and 12 which aren't on other channels at all. as posted on boards a couple of months back.

Looks like most of the population seem to be to lazy to turn on their computer to watch it or record it on tv. :D

Where else would I record a live Irish tv bulletin at 09:00?

Well you have 3 opportunities to record rte news, 1pm, 6pm, 9pm.

It's easy as hell to record these days with sky + or you can get a saoirview box that can record.

Or you can just watch it live!

Or just watch It online live or go on rte player.

Or watch it on your mobile on rte player with the mobile provider Internet.

I watch it, in spite of me having broadband, no usage cap and ability to watch it on the app on my smartphone too if i wanted. I also have a PVR so could record if I wanted.

It's just handy that I can watch RTE news on the telly any time of the day.

They should get rid of the frame on the right though with the weather and stock prices etc. Also +1 on the idea re. the week in politics.

I watch it more than I watch 3e. (Now that Tallafornia is over :p )

    So we can either:

    1. Simply flick over to RTE NN to see the news
    2. Have a regime of recording all RTE's news bulletins on the off chance we want to watch one and manage deleting old ones so they don't fill up the disc
    3. Make sure you always watch every news bulletin at 1, 6 and 9
    4. Pay for Broadband, (if it is available where you are) and use up lots of your usage allowance to watch TV Online as the family huddle round the little laptop screen to see the picture.

I know which sounds easiest to me.

Recording at 1, 6 or 9 pm will not give you LIVE news at 9 in the morning

Its got some use, like checking the weather, it carries Oireachtas Report, repeats of Prime Time and so on, it need to be boosted by covering things like Dail committees and high level political visitors live

I think the idea is good, but goddamn, get rid of the windowed way they show the video, with stupid content boxes up the side, along with the ticker.

I'd rather fullscreen video with just maybe a ticker. Is the lack of bandwidth the reason the video is "windowed" as it does look quite compressed as is.

I thought we had MHEG5 to give that framed effect for those that want it. I would prefer a clean screen with no ticker. If I want that nonsense, I can press the MHEG5 button to get it.

I think the simmulcast element should be discontinued, and should be replaced with a more intelligent schedule. They have plenty of content if they choose to use it. They have free access to Euronews, Dail debates, etc etc.

I am sure they will fix it after the launch next October.

I actually enjoy the very idea of having an Irish news channel. Of course the question has to be asked if it will generate any money for montrose, and the answer is no. I say that because BBC News Channel and Sky News are both loss making.
RTE News Now, should be as previous posters said, be repeating PrimeTime, Week in Politics, etc.
After all, the BBC News channel are pretty good at repeating Question time, Panorama and click all over the weekend schedule.
I am unsure as to why RTE News Now, dont have news headlines on the hour.
Another idea, is for RTE News Now, show BBC World News as opposed to BBC News channel overnights.
On the RTE Choice digital station, they seem to relay BBC World Service Radio, which would suit RTE I think.
Keep RTE News Now, and just make it better.

The difficulty is they are precluded from advertising so there is no revenue.

Also they appear to be precluded from showing unbroadcast material. (they may not be, but they do not!)

If they want to improve it, they must first grasp the idea Saorview is the premium broadcast method, and other methods are irrelevant. In other words, Saorview is primary, and RTE always assumes every viewer has access to all Saorview channels. At present, Saorview is incidental and anything that is not the analogue channels is ignored.

It's being used now to broadcast the Euro 2012 squad announcement. Good to see.

Yes - but not before it is broadcast on RTE 1.

I would like to see it broadcast on RTE News Now on Sunday at some time between 6pm and 9pm, or better still, live while it is being recorded.

RTE used to be a leader in live broadcasting and more and more are moving away from it.

    Somewhat relevant:
RTE will start a morning news programme on RTE One from 9am-11am in 2013, produced by RTE News Now, while #twip moves to Sunday midday.

Looks like Kevin Bakhurst (new head of news from September, formerly head of BBC News Channel) is moving fast.

Again, just like with RTE Junior, this is very unnecessary simulcasting post ASO. Might make since for a short period to advertise the existance of RTE News Now and its content but no more than that.

I fear this is entirely driven by the current lack of RTE New Now (and RTE Junior) on UPC and Sky.

They broadcast the Derby semi-finals the same way back in September. Hopefully we will see more items like this.
