How do I restore my HTC Desire HD with a custom ROM to its original state prior to selling it, or will it be necessary to restore it  Have the One X now and my DHD is ready for a new home :D

Try a factory reset, not sure if it will un-root the phone though

Factory reset won't unroot the device. It will however revert it to the software the phone came with.

Factory reset will neither unroot your phone, or restore the ROM to the one it came with. Just remove your data and settings.

It is just important that you inform potential buyers that it is rooted.

I'm sure you can find a video tutorial of how to restore the original firmware/kernel by googling. Alternatively flash CM9, which will give new buyer the option of root access or not by means of a toggle switch in the settings menu

Cheers, I wanted to clean off my personal data, which is done. I understand that it is not possible to revert the phone back from custom Rom? And of course I would inform any buyer of this, thinking though that this will propably lower its value...

Can you not get the stock EU ROM from http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads and use put that on it instead?

Just a matter of interest how much are you looking for?

I have the One X since it was released in Ireland, bit over a month now. It feels much lighter than the DHD that I was using for almost 2 years, the screen is bigger and clearer as well, although the phone is not too large in my opinion. I use it a lot, push email, gmail, FB, few addictive games and of course use it as a phone as well - the battery is bit of a disaster. If you switch of WiFi and 3G, then it lasts for ever, but otherwise I get the usual 7am to 10pm... I still would not swap - camera is much better than DHD, video as well. Overall I am pleased with it :D
