I understand that the Dreamboxes are a 'sensitive subject' on here. Due to the nature of .. well. you know. But I wish not to talk about that :)

I recently came across two sites and just looking for feedback on either one, or perhaps even a bricks and mortar store to buy one?

sites in question are: (mods please delete links if need be)

    http://www.dreamboxireland.com/
    &
<MOD EDIT: Deleted: Site discusses card sharing>

I see a vast difference in price on both sites. Hence why I am creating this thread.

    thanks.

if you want a real Dreambox and not a clone it will cost, if you want a Linux based rx there are plenty of alternatives besides clone DM's

same as a Lada with a Mercedes badge on it,

    wow.
Like, I knew there was clones. Didnt know the price between clones and legit cost so much tho

So I am better off just buying an original so - saving so much hassle as a clone will cause problems?

I have an old 500s clone and there are the odd things with it e.g. it wont boot up with the network cable plugged in but other than that it is fine. Think it was <80 euro to buy a few years ago. Works fine for what I need it for anyway but I suppose it is always a risk getting a clone.

There is a web full of info about which software to load that is perfectly safe. I have had Dreambox clones for years without any probs at all

Okay, Dreamboxes are a touchy subject. They do have a legitimate use as free to air receivers, but its their potential for card sharing (and their previous use on the NTL network as "dodgey boxes") which makes discussion on Boards a problem.

So I'll restate the rules again:
    • Discussion of Dreamboxes or similar is COMPLETELY BANNED in the Cable/MMDS/IPTV forum
    • On Satellite and Terrestrial, you can only discuss them in their use as a free to air reciever. So much as a mention of card sharing and the thread will be locked.

I've edited out a number of links that mentioned card sharing and it might be best for everyone if there aren't any more links.

If this is repeatedly flouted we will ban all discussion of Dreamboxes.

I got a 500HD clone from satboxes.com a few months back. Had a bit of trouble initially getting an image that was to my satisfaction, but have a nice stable version on it now, have it set up for 9E, 13E, 19E and 28E, having 7 day epg for 9E and 28E is great.

Bought it knowing full well there was no hard drive for recording (not that I wanted it), and that I might be able to use a USB header on the board and additional connectors to use memory sticks with it, but to my surprise, it already had an internal and external port. Have a cheap 64MB stick inside for EPG information, and use the external port for recording.

It does take a bit of getting used to, and you need to know the sim version inside, but once you know that, and join a good dedicated support forum, and you're willing to put a bit of learning in initially, it's well worth it. There are other linux boxes out there, but I chose mine figuring that there was likely to be continued support for it longer than most others.

Only thing now that I would fault it on is the startup time from cold, I don't know how long it is, but it might be 1-2 minutes (from standby, it comes out almost instantly). But given the complexity inside, it's to be expected. My old SL-65 boots up in about 10 seconds from cold, so that comparison is where my complaint stems from.

I have had several dreamboxes, all originals, but to be honest I see no problem at all with the clones which are available, they are perfeclty fine from a Hardware perspective.

By the way unless you know at least the basics of Linux, and are comfortable around ftp / telnet / reflashing etc, then you may be better keeping away from Linux receivers, they are quite a lot of effort otherwise.

Concerning the rules etc, perhaps it would be more pertinent to ban softcam discussion rather than defining no-no's which are based on Hardware? E.g. one can just as easily configure a Linux PC to be able to do everything which a dreambox can. Just my 2 cents.

    Rgds ... Wally

I've had boxes of them to, no problems with them. I've clones, a 500 that's been going for 3 years and an 800 that's close to 2 years. Suppose that's the kiss of death on it!
