Hi, I'm not great with computers and thought you guys could help me out.

I'm trying to get some pics and such off an old PC and onto a Macintosh. I don't have the old tower anymore but I took out the drive. I bought an IDE cable that connects from via USB > Mac to Drive. The thing is, I don't know what to do next...

The only thing that is coming up on the screen is iTunes to play whatever music CD I happened to leave in the old drive 4 years ago. I may sound like an idiot here but I'm guessing this old drive cannot run simultaneously with the Mac drive...should I turn off my Mac and maybe I'll be asked when I booting which one to run?!?! I've no idea.

Thanks for replies. I'm really lost.:(

I don,t know much bout macs, can you right click drive, open, view contents explore ,the drive is either in ntfs or fat32 windows format
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1078888
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
No individual file larger than 4GB.
    NTFS
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write NTFS from Leopard: Install MacFUSEand NTFS-3G. You can install both with NTFS-3Gfor Mac OS X.
To Read/Write NTFS from Snow Leopard: Guide: Enable native NTFS Read/Write in Snow Leopard
(Be aware that some are of the opinion that enabling native NTFS in SL is unstable/unreliable, and favor the MacFuse/NTFS-3G method for Snow Leopard)
    HFS

so it depends if pc drive is fat32 or ntfs format ,file format.
unless pc is very old most pcs now use NTFS FILE FORMAT.
WHAT OS have you got, osx,

eg for leopord os,install Macfuse and NTFS-3G Programs.

google acess pc drive from YOUR mac os,leopard, macosx etc

unlikely drive is in fat32 format.

Hi, thanks for help. My Mac is OSX Snow Leopard. What should I download? Shall I just type Macfuse and NTFS-3G programs into Google?!

    go here http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/2010/10/ntfs-3g-for-mac-os-x-2010102.html
    download and install it,
MacFUSEand NTFS-3G. you need to install both,
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23729/macfuse download from there.
i dont know what to install first,
    i,d try macfuse first,
enables macs to read ntfs and various file systems.

i,m not a mac expert ,i just read the basic user notes.
there may be apps in the app store that do the same thing.
if drive is circa 2002 it maybe in fat32 fileformat ,its unlikely

those programs will see nothing.if its fat32 format
if you are stuck, read the user, guide, faqs on those websites

Stupid question . . . are you sure you took out the hard disk or did you take out the CD-ROM drive ?! On the Mac Desktop what icon (if any) appears when you connect this drive ?

Mac OSX can read NTFS partitions so no need to install anything extra if you're just trying to recover files.

The faqs, user guide i read ,Says you need to ENABLE ntfs, file, drive acess , read mode on mac osx ,and its not always reliable,no harm in installing those apps, you can uninstall them if you don,t need them.
I know there,s different versions of mac/leopord os.

Mac OS X Supports NTFS reading out of the box - no enabling required. Unless the OP needs write access to the drives then there is no need to install any further applications.

There are reports that Mac OS X now supports experimental NTFS Writing, this needs to be enabled using the command line/Terminal but is reported to be hit'n miss at best.

Anyway I'm still not convinced that the OP has in fact taken the hard-disk out of his old machine ?!
The only thing that is coming up on the screen is iTunes to play whatever music CD I happened to leave in the old drive 4 years ago.

To me it sounds like he has connected a CD/DVD drive with a disc in it ! But until he comes back and tells us we'll just have to wait :)
