    and how does it compare to getting a traditional job after graduation in terms of experience and salary?

    It is usually a formal program in place by an employer that takes on graduates, knowing full well they have to train them up.

    As opposed to another company/organisation that fills a position and has no formal program in place to consciously target recent graduates.

    I would imagine the latter is less structured and less formal, but I would imagine the pay/terms would be generally similar (it's been a long time since I was a graduate :o ).
