Hi all, I've had a request from a colleague of mine in the States who'd like to buy a couple of the photo's I've recently taken. They'll look after getting a canvas done of it over there. I've no idea how much people charge though.

It'll be one time use? Or maybe they're going to sell your images on canvas for multiple customers?
In other words, to calculate price of each image it's good to know:
    - image use (consumer goods, indoor display, business usage..)
    - details of use (commercial, non commercial)
and other details. Click here and then select 'price' tab. It's just an example and every case is different.

Just a one time use. They want it as a picture for their living room over their sofa.

if its a colleague - give them "mates rates" ...if its an associate (someone you dont actually know but recognise the name) .... charge them "mates rates + 25%)

you do realise that this person actually wants the digital file ? which will allow them to print it off as often and as many times as they like ...and given that they live (I assume) several thousand miles away ...they could in theory sell the image locally.

Mates rates = whatever you want that you feel is fair !!

to be honest - if you are not a professional the person offering to purchase it is not expecting professional rates - so they will probably expect to pay €20-50 max (at a guess)

in theory you should calculate how much you spent on creating the image in the first place - but no-one will be willing to part fund a hobby (I'm assuming you are not professional)

Oh and dont forget to declare the extra income to revenue !! ;)

PCPhoto, yes I do realise that. I am slightly hesitant because of that. Although I don't think this person will do that you always have to be careful. I might have a think about a better way of getting the information to them but through a safer means. Perhaps a third party site or something.

No, I'm not a professional it's just a hobby for me at the moment, but perhaps something I'll look at down the line.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

Sell them a product instead of the file. Ask for the type and size of canvas they would like and then quote them a price. Charge whatever mark up you would have sold them the file for so you still get the same amount of money and they still receive the canvas but you keep the file.

You can then order the canvas through a site like mpix.com who will ship directly to their address in the US. The quality from mpix is excellent.

Yup, find out what size canvas they want and then look up how much it'll cost plus delivery at an online store relevant to their location (not that that matters really).
If there's any quip about not getting the file then you'd have to raise an eyebrow. Mostly though I'd relax about and make no fuss. The copyright is yours no matter. If he sells it and makes money then I'd ask how?
