i want to join sky, want to leave upc. have a friends (former neighbour) old sky+hd box and dish still here. could i use these or do i have to take a new box from sky?

Sky will give you a new Sky Box and Dish for free with a new subscription, some cases they might charge for install, if you want to sing up call them and try to get a reduction on the subscription some cases they can give you a 25% off, another option will be to subscribe using the Fatcheese link and can get up to €135 if taking the HD package (it can take 4 months or longer to get cashback).

You can use the Sky box and dish without a subscription if you're happy to stick with the free-to-air channels (uk site but should be same here) and no Sky+ features.
