Gamecube's 10th anniversary

Just noticed this on Eurogamer: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-03-gamecube-celebrates-10th-birthday-in-the-uk

I know these topics pop up every so often, but I really loved the Gamecube! I remember the screenshots of the Resident Evil remake tipped me over the edge; I had to have that console!

I got it and Rogue Leader at launch, got pretty much every significant title on it. I always felt the PS2-only crowd were missing out in a big way, the Gamecube versions of the multiplatform titles were usually superior.

This makes me feel old :pac:

Still remember the day i got my Purple one, with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
Mostly old TVs in the house with no composite/scart, except my sister's one. but she didn't know how to change over to the av channel so no luck there :(
Ended up playing it on a tiny 5 inch TV (think it was supposed to be powered with a battery pack/"portable" somehow :P) as it had composite sockets.

That's all i had until Super Mario Sunshine that october...finally got a decent TV for christmas!

    Great console.

Me too. I feel old whenever people refer to a game that I bought on release as retro!

I got a black GCN, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was the second game I got for it. I spent hours raising Chao and playing the mediocre multiplayer!

The Gamecube was brillant. Games like Killer 7, XIII, Pikmin, Luigi Mansion, Viewtiful Joe, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario etc really gave the console some character. Those small discs were always lovely too.

A friend got one with Luigi's Mansion on launch day. We powered it up, stuck in the wee disc, and then we all laughed when we realised how crap the game was (except the guy who'd just shelled out for it.) Can't believe they're making another one of those actually, and that people appear to be looking forward to it.

The Cube was an aesthetically-pleasing console though, bar the crappy little handle on the back (no wonder it got labelled a kiddie's console.) Shame it had such poor third-party support. It will probably be the last time Nintendo release a console that's in-step with the rest of the generation in terms of hardware, which is a bit sad when you think about it...

I picked up a black one with ISS, Luigi's Mansion, Sonic Adventure Battle 2 and Rogue Squadron 2 - Rogue Leader.

ISS was a bit meh. Rogue Squadron was awesome, the Death Star attack looked so true to life/film. The only thing I didn't like about that game was the amount of people who spelled it "Rouge Leader" like it was some sort of whore academy game. Have to disagree with Kinski, Luigi's Mansion was brilliant, just good old fashioned fun. And I too pissed many an hour up the wall raising my Chao army. I really think Sonic Generations missed a trick on the 3DS not having a Chao garden and streetpass functionality for chao races and battles, it would have turned a mediocre game into an absolute must have.

All in all, loved the Gamecube, hated the little Gamecube Ghettos they set up in the back of games stores amidst the racks and racks of PS2 and Xbox games. Nearly made me not get the Wii. Then they announced the Zelda and Mario games and sucked me back in :)

Think there's a Japanese game like that. :)

I didn't get it at launch but I got the black Cube. I never understood why people complained about a lack of games. There are still loads I haven't played. And it gave us the great Metroid Prime.

I got it as a Christmas present with Burnout and Crazy Taxi. Not being a racing fan I was a wee bit disappointed (Yeah, ungrateful I know) but I played them and thought Burnout was great. Racing sims - No. Fun racing games - Yes.

And I remember after finishing Super Mario Sunshine, finding out it was just pretty much rushed out and thinking it goes to show how good Nintendo are as I thought it was better than a lot of games that took their time.

Then got games like Viewtiful Joe. Think I only ever got to level 3.
It was on that console I became a fan of the updated Prince of Persia games and Timesplitters. We need new games for each of those. Now!

And of course, Wind Waker :D

But I agree on the treatment of Gamecube. Being relegated to less and less shelf space. Was bad.

Probably my joint favourite Nintendo console (tied with N64)!

Just a ridiculous amount of high quality games. From the top of my head I had:

Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Rogue Leader, Mario Sunshine, Resident Evil Remake, RE4, Timesplitters 2 & 3, Super Monkey Ball, Viewtiful Joe, Eternal Darkness, Waverace, WWE Day of Reckoning 1&2, FZero GX plus quite a few more!

Bought it at launch with Rogue Leader. I got ISS2 shortly after but ended up selling that. Think that was the only Gamecube game that I traded in!

I never bought a GameCube when they were on release. I had a PS2 at the time and at the time my interest in gaming was very low. I don't even remember being too aware that the GC existed.

Last summer though I picked up a GC and a whole load of the top rated games for it. I got Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, Luigi's Mansion, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime 1 & 2 and Rogue Leader.

Still need to find the time to play them though

I loved the Gamecube! I remember queuing up in Game in Limerick the morning it came out and not being allowed to play it for weeks because of the junior cert hahaha.

The controller was excellent on it. It's only a shame it didn't have DVD support like the panasonic version, I think that's probably what killed it..

I had the black one with Metroid Prime, Rogue Leader, Burnout, Timesplitters 2, Pikmin, all unbelievable games!

    I wish I had it still :(

My GC game list consists of
    Burnout - NA
    Crazy taxi - NA
    Eternal Darkness - to play
    Majora's Mask - To Play (I know. Don't judge me. :()
    Mario Kart - NA
Medal of honour - to Play
    Metroid Prime - Finished
    Metroid Prime 2 - Finished
MGS Twin Snakes - To Play
Prince of Persia Sands - Finished
Prince of Persia Thrones - Finished
Resi evil 0 - To play
Resi Evil 1 - To play (Finished as Jill but plan on restarting as Chris and play the entire series)
Resi Evil 2 - To play
Resi Evil 3 - To play
Resi Evil 4 - To play
rogue Squadron 2 - To play
    Soul Calibur 2 - NA
    Super Mario Sunshine - Finished
    Timesplitters 2 - Finished
    Timesplitters 3 - Finished
    Viewtiful Joe - To play
    Wind Waker - Finished
    Worms 3D - NA
    XIII - To play

Some of the ones marked as To Play were started but never finished. Ones marked as NA, I look at as not having a definite end like racing games.
In there I suppose you could throw the rest of the Zelda collection that had the first 2, Majora and Ocarina, but I just counted that as Majora.
I just stopped playing consoles for a long time as I started working crappy hours in a hotel, then by the time I really started again, the next gen was out

I plan on getting a controller extension in the next couple weeks so I can begin playing them on the Wii.

If you mean the classic controller, don't. It won't work with the GC games. You'll need a proper GC controller, wired or Wavebird.

Nah I just mean an extension for my GC controller so it reaches the Wii from my sofa. :)

Which reminds me, does anyone know if there's any difference between playing Cube games on Wii and playing on the Cube?

You can't use the LAN adaptor to connect multiple game cubes....but other then that, nothing i believe :pac:

The Cube gave us Metroid Prime and Resi 4. 'Nuff said.

Monkey Ball 1 & 2 and Warioware, best god damn fun games the gamecude has, still have a local multiplayer party every week or so :p

Ordered my controller extension lead at the weekend so will have to try it out when I get it. :)

I thought it was good as well, bit short but no way crap. Loved my gamecube, have one in the kids room now so they are getting plenty of use out of it too.

Now have black, purple and silver resi 4 gamecube, can never have too many.

Yea it was kinda short alright. Another gamecube game I really liked was Star Fox Adventures. It was a disappointment for Star fox fans, as it wasn't like previous games. But that is the reason I really liked it, as I like those action adventure games. If it was like the previous version of the game, I would have hated it, as flying around in a space ship and shooting things does not appeal to me.

Can't see how anyone can hate Luigi's Mansion. It's a fantastic game and seemed short at the time when most games weren't 4-6 hours long.

As for Star Fox Adventures, it wasn't disappointing because it wasn't a starfox game, it was disappointing because it was a bad zelda clone.

On Luigi's Mansion, my whole experience of it was playing it that afternoon, and I gave up my go pretty quick. Maybe there was a great game there if I'd played it properly (most seem to think so) but I wasn't inspired by what I saw.

To court further controversy, I wasn't crazy about Pikmin either! :P

I thought it was ok, but Pikmin 2 is an absolute classic.

I've an even bigger confession: I never played Pikmin.

But going to keep an eye out for it and if I can find it cheap either on the cube or Wii, I'll get it.

Got my controller extension. Still have to take it for a test drive

I still have my black one along with 4 controllers, rogue squadron, Metroid games and Pikmin :D

I have a Wii too so it never gets used (neither does the Wii TBH, gone back to Pc with 3DS). Bet it still works though unlike half the 360's or PS3's sold since then :P

    I love Gamecube!

I think its my favorite console or at least on par with the snes or saturn. Love the design, little discs, controllers and Double Dash.
    It had Gladius as well.

So many great games for it, its a little charmer of a console.

Just about to start Viewtiful Joe. Last time I attempted this I died. A lot

After many many hours and many deaths I finally got to level 2, where a whole new world of pain opened up on me.

If you have a Wii, then you have a Cube
After many many hours and many deaths I finally got to level 2, where a whole new world of pain opened up on me.

Reminds me of a comic I read for Dragon's Lair coming to ios with continues went something along the lines of
"Oooh I've never seen that level before. What is it?"
"Yeah few people have ever gotten this far. Level 2"
    :D

I'm on level 2 I think and have died a few times from having to fight 2 helicopters, one after the other.

    Nope. It's the one where
start above ground, move into the sewer then back up. Fight helicopters then move into hotel. Boss at the end has big axe. Then it turns to flying. Turned it off just when facing Bruce the shark dude end of Episode 3 and dying. Gees they don;t half put you back far enough when you lose all your lives
