Managing a central music library and using different players

I'm looking for a few pointers and tips on this. I'd like to have a single music library on a NAS. However, I'd like to be able to access it using different players. I'm not a fan of iTunes and don't like buying my music there but we do have a couple of Apple Macbooks and iPods so there's a convenience to that. I also have a WD Live box and have that connected into my TV and amp. My ideal scenario is an agnostic library that all players can hook into. There's also a couple on Android phones in the mix.

Now I may be over complicating matters and having a 'doh' moment but don't want to go down a route that is hard to retreat from!

I'm not sure if it's what you're after or not, but I use subsonic to access my music library on most of my devices.

All PCs Macbooks etc can access the library either directly via a web browser, or via one of the apps available for it http://www.subsonic.org/pages/apps.jsp. For Iphones/Android etc, it's best to use an app. There are more apps and plugins available than are listed on the apps page, do a search on the forum to see if there's something missing you need. I did a quick search for a WD live plugin and couldn't find one, but that should be able to access the files directly from the NAS.

I mostly use it to stream music directly from the server, but it also allows direct downloads. Just be aware though that downloading to an android device is not that obvious - you have to cache the music locally and it will then be visible to the local players if that's what you prefer (be sure to set an appropriate cache size, mine is unlimited).

If you're looking for something to sync with iDevices, you could do worse than check out MediaMonkey. Its not entirely free, but the freeware version has most of the features the paid version does. I did actually pay for it, mainly to help me get my 300Gb+ unruly library under tag control. Which I'm happy to say it now is!

Subsonic is also an amazing option if you want to stream your music to anywhere. I recommend donating and getting yourself a subdomain for ease of us outside your home network.
