When selling a car do you put it up for more then you hope to get for it so people can bargin you down ?

Or do you put it up for sale at the price you want to get for it and then just stick at the price ?

Always ask for more than you'll take, it's not culturally acceptable here not to come down a bit on price. The only question is how big the gap should be - smaller if you want a quick sale, bigger if it's something unusual and you're prepared to wait.

If someone phones about the car, don't fall for the standard tactic 'what's your bottom line price?'. If you cave in and quote a lower price, the prospective buyer (if he bothers to turn up) will start haggling you down from that price, not the original price so your response should be: 'She's a great motor, well looked after and priced to sell, come and have a look at it and make me an offer'.

Sometimes caving in on the price over the phone can act against you, might be seen that you're desperate to sell so maybe there's something wrong with the car.

Don't negotiate on a specific price over the phone. By declaring that you want the buyer to come and look at the car before you'll start negotiating the price, you'll at least eliminate a lot of the tyre kickers. Let them know that you're not absolutely stuck on the price but don't give anything away over the phone.

10% ontop of the least you will take, i always assume this when looking for a car, if i had 10 grand ready to go and a car was up for 11 grand and they wouldn't atleast haggle down 5% i would just walk away.

That being said i would never make an offer on a car w/o giving it a good viewing and test drive, haggling before actually seeing a car is the first sign of a timewaster.

Not really... When I was buying my skyline it was for sale or 6500eu, I called him and asked how much realistically you want to get for it? So he went to 5500eu, so I asked him to come over to my friends garage and I'll pay him 20eu for petrol. He came, I had a check on it, got price down to 5000, due to some hidden faults. Payed 20eu, and 5k for car.

I always do that myself, as I really start to dislike those 10% prices just for shots and giggles. I bought my Mazda for 5k too, payed full listed price, but only after it got nct. If car is good, then no problem to pay asking price, but of you do know it is overpriced, then there is nothing bad in asking for realistic price.

Im a salesman by trade im used to sorting the timewasters from the potential sales 9 times out of 10.

Everyone is different though and my approach if say i wanted 1500 off a 13-14 grand car would be to look at it first, also seems like that guy with the Skyline was fairly local to you ?

Well buying/selling car is a bit different. I would newer haggle on stuff like carpets furniture or floorings... Its like going and haggling in tesco for milk etc. I presume you sell new stuff?

Yup new stuff, some been in storage for years mind :p

Good example is i have 11,500 to play with for my next car and im not even bothering looking at cars over 13 grand, i have this mental image of driving to dublin from galway and the person saying over and over "shuuuure i can't take less than 13 graaaaaaaand lad" and driving home pissed off :(
