Switching some game types to a subscription model

This is an idea that popped into my head based on our discussions around second hand stuff and the issues with CoD and EA Sports titles which have a yearly release and where there is, to be honest and fair, a considerable amount of asset re-use. Shouldn't these games just switch to a subscription only service like an MMO on a PC? Large game patches aren't unheard of there if you want to make a significant asset change or engine change (and for people still daft enough to live in areas with no proper tubes, you can probably make arrangements for physical releases).

Would it work do you think? You get to play your game, when there's new content, instead of it being DLC you have to buy separately, you're already paying for it in your subscription. Similarly, with something like a sports game, the team rosters are kept up to date during transfer season and draft season (or whatever the equivalent is for the sport in question).
