Playing without GUI Card question.

    Hi folks,

I recently got my h/c and found out my GUI number.

The card won't arrive for another week or so.

Will I be able to play in competitions w/o the card itself?

I'm new to the system so I'm not familiar with the process of entering your score after the round (esp without a card). Is it possible or is there away around it?

    Cheers

I never bring mine around. I just remember the card number - makes life easier.

This is true, except some clubs have signs up saying players must have GUI cards with them to enter competitions.

OP, I'd give the place you're going to play a ring beforehand. I'd say most clubs will accomodate you, especially as you're waiting for your card

The practise of using your number only, will come to an end sooner rather than later and you will need your card to swipe in to enter competitions in opens etc,,,

Why do you think that?, and I doubt it very much.

There are a lot of cards whose PIN is the same as their GUI no.I've known of lads messing around with bookings which can be funny but it's very annoying. That's only the start of it-a lot of .1's being given back and all that jazz.

A lad I know has three other members' of different golf clubs membership no.s and can log in to their account to see how busy their open comps are any time he likes!

Because of the anecdotal evidence of abuse.

There are people using friends cards to play in open competitions off of false handicaps, and further people whose memberships have lapsed are arriving to clubs giving their expired number and being allowed to play in competitions,

And having it swipe only is going to change this how exactly?.

Jaz, your only problem is your account may not be activated with golfnet if you have not played a comp at the home club, meaning your details wouldn't be on the away clubs system, but they can enter you manually, so you can still play away of course.

(also the actual process of signing in you can always by-pass the swipe card & enter your gui number).

It will be a difficulty with the personation but it is being worked on at the moment, as for the out of date membership bit this will be flagged through the system, (provided clubs keep their membership database up to date,) when the card is swiped, it will become compulsory to enter only by the swipe card.

    Aghhhh ...

The card is swiped and number is read off the card. There is no difference entering it by hand other then the inconvenience of having to use your fingers. it's the same thing really. There will always be an option of manually entering the number as card readers/cards fail, a players ability to enter their GUI number shouldn't.

kph clears it all up , exactly what i was going to say , in terms of "security" issues raised above , surely checked by means of looking for other means of identification if manually signing in
