I'm successfully keeping Amazon Swords, Vals, Anubias, Java Fern, and cabomba in a 120L tank with just gravel and no added ferts/CO2.

I have a few different types of Vals and I throw in some liquid Co2 once a day. Seems fine. Not using any special substrate just fine quartz gravel.

I am looking into this method myself.
