Does anyone know of any good hostels in Sydney?

I'm male, 25, and will be arriving in Sydney on July 2 on a whv, have mates over there but not sure if they will have space at their place so looking to find out any info about hostels! Will be on my own so will be looking for ones that have a good social scene in order to meet a few people!

Anyone arriving around the same time, give me a shout! :)

I used WakeUp! (http://www.wakeup.com.au/) on two trips over and found it to be very good. First trip was for a week and the second I spent about 6 weeks there. Location wise its right in the centre of Sydney so hard to beat. They have a pub/nightclub in the basement so very easy to meet people there. Seemed to be very secure while I was there too with keycards to access each floor with the lift and again on each room and security on the main door at night to stop randoms coming in without a keycard. I only ever had a private room there though so I dont know what its like sharing with strangers etc.

the other guy's reccomendations are good...

here's a guide if you want to check and compare hostels.

if you staying for a while (at least a few days) a public transport travel pass is good value. bus, train ferry etc are all included and it is unlimited travel on all of 'em.
For $2.50 per person, your family can enjoy a fun day out with unlimited travel on Sydney's buses, trains, ferries and light rail every Sunday. The ticket will even take you to Newcastle and Wollongong!

I'm up the road at Newcastle and it has good beaches and a couple of hostles right near the main beach you walk around the corner to the train station or down Hunter st. (or free buses in the city) to the pubs & clubs and stuff.
