I am booking my 2nd theory test and I have a copy of the book given to me by a friend but its the 4th edition. Do i need to splash out on the 5th edition or will this be okay? How many new questions are in the new edition?

Bit of background -I have failed the theory test once...shocking I know. Ive never failed anything in my life but I used the CD only and it just didnt work for me. I think I need to scribble things down and see things on paper for my brain to function!

I had the CD and 4th edition book and there are some differences, I had a quick look through the book the morning of my test and got a question wrong because the information in the book was different to the CD.

I know it's very extreme and it took me ages to do it but I went through every question on the CD and after that never failed any of the tests, like I said very extreme but sure I passed my theory so I'm happy.

When I passed my first theory test, I'd been studying using a borrowed copy of the CD-rom of the previous edition. Some of the questions were different but I'd done lots of study and enough of the material was the same that I passed comfortably (1 or 2 wrong answers).

Unfortunately, as I didn't have the opportunity to get a car, I didn't get a learner permit within the two years so when I had to do the test again, I didn't feel like studying too hard. Rather than get the CD, I bought a copy of the Rules of the Road and went through that. While I knew the test wasn't based on the Rules of the Road, I figured it shouldn't conflict with the actual rules and common sense should help with the rest. It turned out that there were a couple of questions that were specific to vehicles such as tractors that I didn't know the answer to but I still passed the test - though not quite as comfortably as the first time round.

Best of luck with it and hope this helps.

Buy the 5th edition CD and just keep doing practice tests.

All of the questions I got in the real theory were the ones that came up in about 15 different practice tests on the CD.

Of the 40 Qs in the practice tests, about 5 new Qs appear in every subsequent test.

I'm about to buy the 5th ed :( Cant find second hand copy anywhere. I had the 4th one and studied and booked and paid for my test - on the day I was late and the taxi driver didn't know his backside from his elbow and didn't know how to get to centre and I stupidly did not know the directions (ironic really on the way to a driving test centre)

When you pass the theory test, is it just a matter of having the eye exam and applying for provisional? After this can you drive once you have a fully licensed driver in the car with you? I had an eye test done about 3 months ago, would that be sufficient?

    Pass test
Take eye test (one 3 months ago is not sufficient)
    Apply for learner permit
Find an ADI who will give you your EDT Logbook for your mandatory lessons.
Practice with a fully licence holder who has held it for 2 years minimum

You could get the new theory test on android and iphone - use it on the jacks or whenever you have a spare minute.

It's based on (but not officially) the RSA question database for 2012 (5th edition)

Android and Iphone users can stay fresh whenever they get a spare minute.

    ANDROID - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=t4t.projct.theorytest
    IPHONE - http://tunes.apple.com/us/app/unofficial-irish-driver-theory/id519641693?mt=8

    Enjoy!
