How does this sound

    Hey

So I think I may have a clutch problem with my car ; a 2005 Audi A3 2.0 TDI manual 6 speed. It has 70,000 miles on it

Lately ive noticed that when I press the clutch it makes a strange noise that it hadnt made before

so e.g. I start the car, then start pressing the clutch to put it in gear, for the first inch of the press, it makes one noise, hard to describe but kinda like an air noise, then after I have pressed it past one inch , it makes a different noise, again , hard to describe, kinda like a whirring noise.

Both these noises are not terribly loud or alarming, they just dont sound right

I have no problem with changing gears or crunching gears and dont need to force the car into gear, all that is fine. Just when I am changing the gears I can hear the noises as above.

I know its hard to diagnose from above, but does this sound like me clutch is fecked ?

It just sounds like a noisy brake servo tbh. Maybe it was that noisy all the time and you never noticed it. Does the clutch feel any different? Harder? Softer etc?

are you sure it noises when you depress the clutch pedal?

does it noise when you take yer foot of the clutch and the car is in neutral justing ticking over?

    thanks for replies

@Quazzie, no, it was never noisy like this before. im sure of this, only started happening last week. Clutch feels the exact same, not harder or softer.

@MidlandsM, it only makes these noises when I press the clutch pedal. When the clutch pedal is not pressed i.e as you say, when my foot is off the clutch and car in nuetral, there is no strange noises at all

If its only making the noise when u press the clutch I'd be inclined to say that it's the release bearing on the clutch it wouldn't be uncommon for a release bearing to go. Just one thing that would need to be checked is it a mechanical release bearing or a hydralic release bearing.

    Thanks.
so based on this, would the clutch need to be replaced ?

and what does the mechanical release bearing or a hydralic release bearing mean to the repair

Is one of them a big job or both a big job ?

Sounds like a clutch release bearing. Mine is making the same noise but not affecting the car at all. Passed the NCT last month with it too just like the mechanic said it would. In my case it was a bit of water that did it.

I know how the water got there too so I at least know the rest of the car is fine.

So do or did you need to fix anything ?
    If so, what ?

Yes if it's the clutch release bearing the whole clutch should be replaced at the same not a major job tho for any handy mechanic

Anyone have any rough estimate on the cost to replace the clutch ?

Id bring it to a mechanic for a proper diagnosis before id worry too much based on the opinions of internet strangers.

Id you have the clutch out I'd probably replace the DMF too which would be about €900. Clutch alone I'm not certain probably €500 or so.

mmmmm, just as I had feared, expensive enough. Car passed the NCT this morning anyways.

    On another matter,

What would cause a clutch to go

    > my driving : mainly city driving in start/stop traffic

    > my driving style maybe

Or just a combination of both of the above

City driving is not very good for a modern diesel fitted with a dual mass flywheel (DMF).

Sorry meant to reply earlier. It should pass the NCT ( as you say it did ) with no problems if it's just the release bearing that's noisy. Mine passed with no probs either as the mech assured me.

I didn't replace mine yet. I am going to wait and replace the whole clutch kit in one go if it remains as it is. Which is about 5 - 6 months now since. The noise doesn't bother me. It did at first but you get used it it. You won't hear it except when it's quiet around you anyway such as in your driveway.

If I wanted to change just my release bearing it'd cost me about €30 for the part new and about €50 or so for the mechanic to change it out. But it would be easier to stick with it and replace the whole lot in one go.

So would changing the release bearing only make the noise go away ?

I presume this would only be a temporary measure anyways and clutch would eventually need to be replaced ?

How long would I get away with just doing the release bearing before havin to replace the whole clutch setup.
