Hi all.... i'm crossing between forums here on this subject so i thought id just clean it up and start a new thread.

basically im looking to buy a car. had a 97 audi a4 1.9 tdi which was very good to me hence why i decided to go for an upgrade: 05 a4 2.0 tdi. i saw a very nice one yesterday with 100k miles

however after doing a bit of research online i see that there is a major reliability problem with those A4's. now maybe its just a case that "nobody ever writes a review unless its a bad one" but i was just wondering if people have experience of owning one?

maybe its just a situation that a part needs replacing and then it'll be fine but i'd really appreciate any feedback!

Have the same car with 120k miles. Very fond of it. The only issue I had was it needed a new EGR valve a while back. Not sure if that's a common problem with the model. I had mine remapped and it now gives 180BHP......it really is a bullet when I want it to be. I mainly do motorway miles and get around 43mpg but it could do up to 50mpg with more relaxed driving....not that I drive the crap out it, I just don't pussy around if I can put it that way!

Needs regular oil topups between servicing but that is common for the model. Otherwise it's pretty good, in my book its recommended.

to answer my own question.... i was on the phone to an audi mechanic. he said not to quote him but to stay well clear of the 2.0 tdi's. he said go for a 1.9 instead!

The 2.0 did give trouble with injectors but they were recalled and changed. The only other thing is the oil pump which wont trouble you with a bit of preventive maintainance....

By preventative maintenance do you mean getting the aftermarket kit ?
    Or other things??

Bought a 05 2.0 tdi with BLB engine code in 2009 with 60k miles on it.

    Timing belt at 70k miles
Replaced Flywheel and clutch at 80k miles
Replaced turbo and oil pump drive kit at 82k miles
Replaced header pipe at 105k miles
    Replaced EGR Valve 130k miles
Replaced power steering pump and timing belt at 140k miles
    Aircon is disconnected.

Effectively everything (except EGR and header) above is connected to the flywheel through the drive shaft & balancing shaft which runs everything out of sync. The flywheel is one of those DMF things that are an absolute disaster.

I think most of the damage was done by the original flywheel before I replaced it. Car has nearly 170k now and no sign of gremlins but then I don't drive it anymore.

Lovely car but the above was about €6,000 in 3 years. Steer well clear of anything with BLB engine code.

The BLB code will be written on the timing belt.

Ya the BLB are supposed to give a lot of bother.

I bought a BRE model a few months ago, with a full Audi service history as it was a fleet car. The only problem that wasnt normal wear and tear was that the turbo had to be replaced when it was 2 years old.
