Dell M1710 blue screen

I tjink my laptop has finally given up the goose. Dell M1710, 2.17ghz dual core, 3.25g ram, XP sp3, working perfect aside from the charger connector needs to be raised slightly to get a connection, motherboard replaced less than a year ago (3 chargers and 2 batteries replaced so far), bought new in 2007.

Anyway, working perfect for ages, and while watching breaking bad through the laptop from an external hdd, connected to my tv, I noticed the screen looked like it had an image burn on it, but it doesn't, tested. Next, i cancel out of full screen and I get a frozen screen with the minimized vlc player, black, the containing folder black, no start bar, then blue screen followed by an automatic reboot.

Reboot had same screen burn look, letters all over the screen, and safe mode prompt. Started windows normally, windows logo perfect, blue screen and auto reboot. Start in safe mode, can't do much, no internet, same screen burn image. Starting in normal mode gives the same result, only safe mode will boot up properly-ish. System restore = no difference.

Pics below, video of boot coming soon (slow upload).

Actually, don't know to to attach images on the tablet site...

    Stop screen info:

page fault in non paged area

    Blah blah

    *** stop: 0x00000050 (0xbbd5965c, 0x00000000, 0x8052b918, 0x00000002)

    Google giving me nothing.

Small update, start up still has screen burn look, starting windows normally now going past windows logo and hanging on a black screen, cpu indicator flickers every second or so.

Isn't there a 8 series Nvidia GPU in those machines? These video cards all overheat at some point and sounds like its finally happened to you. Not much you can do with laptops, even getting it repaired will fail at some point

There is indeed. I'd say that must be it, hadn't aproper gaming session on it in a good while, but had a good one yesterday, must have killed it. Is there any visible signs if i open it up?

    Actually, i'm wrong, it's a 7950gtx, but same problem...

Right, last ditch effort to fix, graphics card + oven...

The oven fix should do it, for a while at least. From googling it looks like those machines were also prone to overheating GPU,

Oven didn't work, complete opposite, even the screen/cpu won't start... Ah well, it had a respectful death, middle of a game with a secret stash of porn...

did you remove the actual gpu from the mobo lol

I was going to sell for parts, but i decided to chance my arm a manufactured refurbished gpu (delivered for €101, not bad), which was delivered a few days ago, complete with heatsync. Slotted in perfect, and laptop booted. Working perfect, except...

I've no issues with it when using it as normal, but i hook it up to my Sony Bravia to watch films, etc. Now, i know that it was probably too much gaming (and bad design) which killed the last card, so i'm not going to be gaming on it this time. However, if i hook the laptop to the tv through vga, which i've always done, it will work to watch a movie or two, but if i use the laptop for other reasons, usually youtube, after a while of use i see the blue squares and the screen goes blank. Need to hard reset the laptop and leave it for a while before the laptop screen will turn back on... Strange. Any ideas?

@carbon nanotube: i did, handy youtube video helped me!

since you have done open heart surgery on the laptop, have you totally cleaned out the fans, and replaced thermal compound on the cpu and gpu

with a replacement gpu and a new mobo there is no reason why this can not keep going.

you can also get a x9000 (i think?) cpu and oc it if you are so inclined.

Ah, thermal compound. That could be the issue. I knew not about it until now, but does having the laptop hooked up to a tv through vga really put that much of a strain on the cpu/gpu? I'm on the laptop for the last 4 hours with no bothers, but it's only when hooked up to the tv that there's issues...

cant see how hooking up to a tv and watching breaking bad (awesome show...:D) can do any damage.

i would clean out all the fans, get thermal compound and spend a few hours on it taking your time.

easy to make one mistake and fry it all up.

check the memory modules also, even get meths (not the walter type.) and clean the gold fingers.

actually, it looks like a dodge connection on the gpu.. it cant be anything else.

id remove the gpu again, put on thermal compound, clean fans etc and clean the gold fingers also with meths.

put it all back together and hope for the best.

I'll do all that, just wrecking my head as to why it's only when connected to the tv!! Ah, it has a 21" screen anyway, so when it's on my lap it's the same size as the tv is! :D
