Was playing with an eTrex 30 owned by a friend of mine and noticed that you can select 'GPS' or 'GPS and GLONASS', does anyone know if this improves accuracy (lateral or vertical or both) or any other comments welcome..

Please take it as given that I know that GPS refers to the US system and GLONASS is Russian, I have been using GPS handsets for over 10 years now...

It will make more satellites available to triangulate your position so, yes!

Glonass is the russian version of gps

It's not only down to the sheer numbers of satellites though. The GLONASS satellites' orbits are different to GPS, meaning they are more likely to be visible at more northerly latitudes than GPS, and will also be higher in the sky. This helps particularly in situations where there are significant obstructions such as high buildings, so called 'urban canyons'.

You can see the effect on Trimbles online planning tool at http://www.trimble.com/GNSSPlanningOnline if you set your location to Dublin and look at the World View or the Sky Plot, or examine the various DOP's. You can select whether you want GPS, Glonass or both and see the difference. Great little tool.
