I've looked online but i'm still confused about the course. Do you know some prior qualification to do it? what exactly can you use it for?

    Hi ronano,

You don't any prior qualifications. I think you must be 21 years old. On completion, you will get 10 credits (ECTS) at NFQ Level 7.

You will get a Foundation Diploma in Training and Education, which means you'll have the qualifications and the basic skills to teach or train adults in any topic or category that you have expert knowledge in. This could be computers, fishing, art, how to make strawberry jam, or whatever you can think of.

    Here's some more info:

Any other questions, let me know.

Be careful as there is also a FETAC Level 6 Train the Trainer award as well.

If you are thinking of doing the course in order to obtain work in a publicly funded centre and deliver qualifications from Level 5 upwards (and maybe even Level 4) you will need to be registered with the Teaching Council.

When Section 30 of the Teaching Council Act comes into effect, only those teachers included on the Teaching Council register may be employed in recognised schools and paid from Oireachtas monies. With the changes in FAS and the FE sector it is expected that this will extend to all areas that were formely delivered in the FE/FAS courses but now under the control of Solas.

To be registered you will need a degree or meet the conditions of a Department of Education and Skills circular letter.

I am interested in doing a Train the Trainer course but would only really be able to commit to doing it part-time, ideally in the evening. Does anyone know of one that runs in the evening's or weekend in the Meath, North Dublin or West Dublin area?

When I did my course, it consisted of 2 days in the classroom, and a lecturer came to us at the local community centre to run the course. The course was about 90% funded by LEADER. I think there were two such courses, specially organised through NUIG and the LEADER program, and there were about 8 - 10 people per course, if I remember correctly. It might be possible to organise something similar in your area, maybe if you can get the right numbers.

You should maybe talk to Berna Morgan at NUIG, contact info here:
