It's something that will never stop unless you go into the library at 9 on a Saturday morning when there is no one else on campus. You just kind of have to put up with it.

If that fails then you should invest in a proper set of headphones (not the kind you get with your iPod) and have a look at a thing called white noise and all your problems should go away. I've never used it but others have and it seems to work.

I avoided the library when I was in college. If I needed a book I'd go there and take a few out at a time. Apart from that though I found it useless. The heat settings were never right and I found myself falling asleep because the air conditioning was broken on one of the hottest days of the year and the whole place was full. I found it easier studying at home in my room. I did miss the inevitable library talent that comes out of the woodwork at this time of the year though :P.

That white noise business is excellent. I think it must've been you pointed it out to me a couple of years ago. Great stuff it is. Also helpful at home as there are some neighbours who see fit to have barking dogs and alarms going 24/7.

As for the library... well people are just ignorant. That's never gonna change.

Run this in Csound(or the CsoundQT frontend) and you're golden!

Thanks for the replies. that white noise ideal is real genius. so simple but i would never have thought of it. I got into two arguments in there today. I cant be doing that everyday, i was the one that was upset after it. I just don't get the neck on them though. The eating too, packets of crisps and plastic containers full of salad that are wrapped in tin foil. staff are great though in fairness.

Don't bother getting into an argument in there. It's just a waste of your energy. Just accept that some people will never change and move on. For many people at this time of the year the library becomes the place to be. Everyone is there. My advice would be to avoid it.

I'd recommend getting the books you need out of the library and going into the Arts block. With the lectures finished you'll be able to go into the lecture halls. Find one that is empty or near enough to and go in there.
