MBP sometimes boots, sometimes doesn't...

    Hey guys,

Having some trouble with my 13 inch MBP. It was bought in mid Feb 2012 from the Apple online store, and is a refurb originally from Oct 2011.

It's never booted with 100% consistency. Somtimes it would boot fine, some times the apple logo comes up and the circle just keeps spinning. The odd time I get a circle with a line thru it.

When I wake it from sleep, sometimes it works, sometimes it freezes. There appears to be no consistency with any of these issues. Just totally random.

I read the apple support page but don't feel comfortable doing all the resets, installs etc etc they suggest. Plus I feel like I shouldn't bloody have to anyway - I'm not a tech guy. I want my bloody product to work. I wouldn't try changing the oil in my car or doing my own brakes before going to a garage with a brand new car to see if that fixed an issue.

I figure it must be a harddrive issue, and doing all that stuff wouldn't sort it anyway in that case either.

So, what are my options? I just did a back up so have all my data incase it does die properly.

TL;DR - my MBP gets stuck on the boot screen frequently and I'm not fixing it myself. What can Apple do, who should I contact?

    Thaaaaaanks :)

I'd put my money on it being the HD cable its a known issue in these laptops but they are really really easy to replace. If it's in warranty just leave it in to get fixed, if it isn't you can buy the part on ebay and try it out seeing that the cost of the part is generally less than the inspection fee anyway. Same thing was happening to mine, I have same laptop and cable had to be replaced twice.

Ok if that's the case then I'll be majorly psyched and happy. It's in warranty, I just don't want to be without it because I'm working on a few projects that I absolutely need it for.

Since it's in warranty, will any Apple authorised service centre look at it or does it have to go back ala Cork where it originally came from?

Yeah, any AASP can do in-warranty repairs on a Mac.

Be aware, in warranty or not, if they find its a software issue that's causing it, they will charge you. That's why they get you to do troubleshooting first. Of course you shouldn't HAVE to do it, but you may have installed something that banjaxes the system.
