Irish Rail - 'Standard' or 'First' Class?

    Folks,
Heading to Dub tomorrow (from Galway) on train as it's cheaper than driving (€20 return with valid student ID) for a standard class

Question is, is it worth paying €45 return for 'first' class? It's been years since I was on a train. Either way, paying €45 is cheaper than driving up and down.

    Thanks

No, wouldn't be worth it IMO, maybe on the Cork route where the seats are more comfortable but on the Galway route seats are same size just the carpet is different!

No way, stick with standard. First class on anything other than Cork/Belfast is a rip off. From the Irish Rail site, the benefits are:
Dedicated “Premier” section located beside the Dining Carriage
Available on selected Galway, Westport, Waterford, Limerick and Tralee services
Book your seat online and see your name above your seat on a LED display
In-seat dining available on selected services where full meal service is offered
4 seat and 2 seat table arrangements, seating capacity is 36 overall
220V powerpoint sockets for phones / laptops at every seat
    Wheelchair accommodation available

There's power sockets at every seat anyway, as far as I know. Certainly at the 4 seats/table, which you can book online.
There's wheelchair access in standard class.
There's '4 and 2 seat arrangements' in standard, although the 2 seats only have a flimsy flip down 'table' (airplane style) instead of a proper one.
Apparently seeing your name on a LED display above your seat is some kind of modern miracle - if they bother to switch on the booking system then you'll see this anyway if you reserve a seat.

So the only real benefit seems to be that your carriage will be beside the dining carriage, and you can get your meal delivered to your seat, if that's available. Apart from that, it's exactly the same as standard.

I love the opening paragraph on that first class page:
Treat yourself to first class travel and experience the difference.
Whether you want to work on your laptop, relax with a book or simply watch the world slip quietly by your window.

Because of course there's no windows in standard class, and reading is banned.

    ha ha...

I've gone by first class Galway-Dublin before. I thought I had more leg room, that was the only thing I thought was different, but then I never actually compared how much leg room there's in a std carriage.
I'd say it would also be generally quieter, as fewer ppl get first class tickets, so we got the whole 4 seats to the 2 of us! it was a treat, I normally get the bus...
