The big problem with any of those type of apps is battery life on the phone, GPS seems to be a big drain on the phones power, you'll probably have enough to complete your ride OK but if you don't have access to a charger to top up for the rest of the day you'll be in trouble later.

I have used it. In terms of battery life it would probably give you 8 hours if your phone is fully charged. However I have had rides where the app has crashed and I lose my ride data. This may be due to my battered phone though. I use my tracks to track rides now and upload manually to strava.

Used it a few months ago, was very glitchy then, I'm sure it's better now.

I've tried a load of apps for recording GPS - most of them drain the battery a good bit

The best one by a long way is Google's own - My Tracks - doesn't run down the battery half as much as the other apps.

For extra battery saving - put the phone into flight mode

Edit: just in case it's not spelled out - all you need for the Strava site is a .gpx file, you can use any app you like to record these, you don't need to use the Strava app

thats what I do, I use Cardio trainer, find it pretty cool as it gives you a calorie counter on your homepage to show you how many calories you have burned in the last 7 days.

then on the PC, just save the GPX file and import it into Strava.

For the OP, Strava is great, there are loads of different segments set up in there and the league table is pretty cool and gives you motivation to try and beat some of them times. I know on a few of my spins where there is a segment coming up, so I will make a special effort for that part of my spin to better my previous best time . . . I ain't never going to get to the top, but it is still a goal to beat myself

I use endomondo on a smartphone and have found that if i tweak the settings by turning off automatic upload it uses much less battery. I then just manually upload file to endomondo when finished and then export as a gpx file to strava. I have never had an issue this way but found strava itself more glitchy and power hungry on a phone.

I have been using Runkeeper and then trying to export the gpx file to strava and the first one worked fine. Now when I try to do it, it keeps failing. Has anyone else had this or know what to do?

I find runkeeper very very unstable, won't sync all the time, and is very slooooooooowwwwww

I used to use runkeeper a lot on my iphone, until I started using the Strava app. After I switched I imported all my old Runkeeper cycles into Strava no hassle at all. This was about 2 weeks ago.

By the way the reason I stopped using Runkeeper is because I noticed that Strava uses WAY less battery than Runkeeper. The only thing I miss about Runkeeper is the audio prompts to tell you how far you've gone :)
