Best European country to sell a LHD BMW?

I have to sell my fathers left hand drive '01 BMW 330D which he has owned from new. It is registered on Irish plates with tax and NCT, however its not worth much here unfortunately due to it being LHD and the tax is expensive. Does anyone know which European country would be the best to try and sell it in? I had a quick look on Spanish Ebay and equivalent models are going for 6000+. Only problem is I have no idea what countries have high or low registration tax (like VRT)
Basically I'm looking for the dearest place in Europe to buy a used car, that isn't expensive or complicated to register one over there.
If anyone has any suggestions or done anything like this before, I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Generally speaking you need to be resident in a country in order to register a car there.

6,000 are you sure? A RHD one is 3-4K

Prices of RHD 10 year old cars in Ireland are much lower than the same LHD cars in most other European countries :)

@OP - you need to tell us more. How come your father bought a LHD car new? Was he living on the continent when he bought the car? Is he still living there now?

Thanks for the quick reply. I wouldn't be looking to register the car abroad myself but sell it to someone there who could register it themselves. When I looked up prices in Spain I couldn't believe how expensive some cars were. However if it would cost someone a few thousand to register a car there then that defeats the purpose if you know what I mean?

In Poland it might fetch between 4.5 - 5.5k but I dont know anything about the registration costs there to change the plates.

I would presume that I would be lucky to get 2500 for it in Ireland.

Just based it on what I saw here:

    Why is that?

The economist in me tells me it's all to do with supply and demand. Everybody's selling, nobody's buying. The meeting point between sellers and buyers, the price, is seriously depressed here.

    Cheers...
I was thinking about why demand is lower here eg. Tax, cost of repairs, reg snobbery.

I looked into buying a 2002 3 series myself. Wanted to get a 1.8 petrol and convert to LPG but the other half was having none of it.

Sell it to a Bulgarian. ;)

€50 VRT, cheap tax and insurance. Those are worth serious money here.

He was living in Prague when he bought the car. Moved back to Ireland 3 years later and brought the car back with him and registered it here.

Thanks for replying, that makes sense, turbojunkie

I think Our man in Havana is on the ball here. Anywhere in eastern europe would be were these cars would probably fetch most

I'm with the eastern european people on this one. I'd rather drive a 10 year old premium car than a 5 year old Korean car or the same value myself :)

    Aren't those all stolen?

If it was previously registered in the Czech Republic, perhaps it would be easier to re-register it there?

It's a good point. Unfortunately I don't know what they'd charge to re-register it there despite my best googling efforts. It looks like it would sell for over 5000 euro there from looking here: http://www.ooyyo.ie/used-cars/bmw-3+series-330d/czech+republic/year-2000+2002

Maybe my best bet would be to stick it up on ebay. Is there a European ebay site or do you just make your car available to all of Europe on Ebay.ie? Anyone tried this before?

Throw it up on DoneDeal. You won't get the same price for it as you would on the continent but you will probably get around the same money for it as equivalent RHD car.

www.mobile.de is what you're looking for.

You might have to allow for delivery, so factor that in - I advertised my 2 x RHD 968's there, and got fair interest, but cost of shipping put people off. Maybe you need a holiday in Prague, and a Ryanair flight back ? :)

But won't an LHD car located in Ireland look suspicious to a Bulgarian (even if it's not)? I can imagine the posters on the Motors forum on boards.bg shouting "Това е измама!*" in unison. Imagine someone here posted up an ad for a RHD 330D located in Sofia, and inquiring about whether to buy it or not. People would be saying to run a mile.

    (*excuse my Bulgarian)

    Try exporting to Ukraine
example for you, a corsa 2005 C model, 1.2 petrol, basic spec, automatic was worth $5,500 US 2 1/2 years ago.

Second hand western cars hold big value there!

Indeed - my Tiptronic 968, fsh, was un-saleable here, at any price, and went to breakers in the UK a week ago, for 2900.

But in Germany (and yes, this seems much better condition..) : they go for HOW MUCH ??

Worse, my much better manual one, a 94 car, went to breaking in UK about 10 days ago, for 5300 - whilst in Germany...... it might have got this much.. :(

....and the Loons want me to vote 'Yes' on 30th May ??

Moral of the Story : buy premium stuff in LHD, and at least you've a market to sell it into, in the future.

If the car was originally registered there I can't see it being big money to have it re-registered as it were. Maybe go on to some ex-pat forums there and ask? When you get your answer then post on ebay.cz / Czech car sites explaining that it was originally registered there, etc.

VRT is very small in most European countries, as far as I know our system is actually illegal under EU laws regarding trade between member states and has been challenged by the European Courts in the past. Sorry no links as I'm in work but a bit of googling should lead you some answers.

They get around the law by calling it a registration charge rather than an import duty. That's why you can drive a foreign car here without paying it (under certain conditions)

Thanks for all the advice / replies. I stuck it up on donedeal a few hours ago and I'm getting a lot more interest than I anticipated so more than likely it'll sell here. Most callers are foreigners that want to move back home and by buying a car here they get to transport a lot of their stuff back with them.
