Was at ballinrobe this evening and myself and a friend were to figure out how much the average jockey would get per ride? or are they on salaries with some trainers? always thought that the jockey got 10% of winnings but do they get set fee for riding anyways? can anyone shine any light on this...!!

I'm open to correction because there are people here who'd have experience of riding horses:

They get a fee for riding the horse, with jump jockeys being greater than flat jockeys.
8% of the prize for the position they finish and the same to the trainer. While only those with a retained job would be getting a 'salary' such as McCoy for JP

10% of prize money, 180 euro a ride

I presume they are self-employed and pay all their own taxes, insurance, etc. out of their fees and winnings?

It sounds like a decent wage but I suppose even if a jockey was able and lucky enough to get 10 rides a week its a fairly short career for most of them.

Nh hunt jockeys get 150, flat is 120 or 130 a ride about 30 euro of that is expences is before they even make their way to the track, they get 10% of prize money and after everyone gets their cut they come out with 7 or 7 1/2 % of the prize money. I personally believe their massively under paid...!

Is it illegal for the jockey to get any cut out of betting winnings, or is there some form of 'bonus' for winning on a big gamble?

NH jockeys get more per race as their careers are generally shorter than their colleagues on the flat.

Also, the vast majority of jockeys have to pay their own travel expenses and pay for their own valets. Although many valets work for more than one jockey.

I agree with JimDeChamp when he says they get nowhere near what they deserve.

Every jockey will tell you that there very well paid, your braindead if you think there not! Tough job, very tough but no one doubts how much there paid.
And its 180 for nh, 150 for flat.

And jim, how youve gotten down to 7% fo there prize money is beyond me? Its 10%!

I assume their expenses are quite high. Valet, agent, travel, food etc

While the top lads are probably quite wealthy I'd say many young and/or journey men jockeys don't exactly make a killing

National Hunt Jockey's get the following

    €169.21 Ride Fee

10% of prize money (with further reductions coming from that 10%)

Here's all the details you need, so we can finally end the debate on this matter. Perhaps even sticky it.

I have never met anybody involved with horses that said they get paid well. So you think that getting paid 170 then take away your valet, agents fee, expences for getting their, if you lose a stick in a race, crack a helmet the cost of a new one etc... Then go out in a beginners chase and ride some rotten c**t that used to step at his hurdles is some how wel paid... 7% is whats left after the agent and the injured jockeys fund get their cut. But clearly your the most intelligent person to ever use a keyboard...

Wasn't really sure to be honest, I thought you may have mixed me up with a previous poster.

Know-one know if Jockeys get 'bonuses' as such for wins on big gambles etc?
Under the counter or above board?
    Intrigued..

I know several riders that have gotten extra cash on top of their 7%... I know one in particular that rides alot for a big owner and they have enjoyed alot of success together he gave him 12k cash after a meeting... I know a lot to that have been given betting slips for the horses their riding

    That's a good incentive Jim

Edit: But a downside, if he gets beat then you've lost money that you otherwise wouldn't have given him if he'd been beat.
