I cannot access certain sites such as Tesco.ie, mothercare etc. Is it possible there is a setting on my laptop that is preventing me downloading these sites. There isn't an issue with the sites as friends have no issues accessing them, to just seems to be my laptop.

a browser is the program that facilitates your web surfing enjoyment, i'll assume you're using internet explorer. download mozilla firefox or google chrome (or both to try them out) and give them a bash

What OS (Windows ??) do you use ?

A browser is one of, e.g. Internet Explorer/Firefox/Opera/Safari etc

Did these sites work before ?

Did someone else setup your computer, or is it out-of-the-box ?

Try this - open a command prompt (Start->Run -> type "cmd" and Enter) then type
    ping www.tesco.ie

    and the others ...

and post back the results. If you fiddle about you will learn to copy/paste this info.

Such info will help those here to help you.

[edit] tesco seems down ATM for me:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>ping www.tesco.ie

Pinging www.tesco.ie [212.140.185.62] with 32 bytes of data:

    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics for 212.140.185.62:
        Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

edit: ping still not work for tesco, but website is up.

it sounds like your firewall or localhost settings is blocking them.

to fix the localhost make hiddens folders visible
    then
    open c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host with notepad

clear any entries so that all you have left is this then save

    # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
    # 127.0.0.1 localhost
    # ::1 localhost

Could be just a simple setting in the anti-virus, what version of anti-virus or malware protection are you using.
Malwarebites has a web blocker built in that can be quite annoying.
