new to cycling and really enjoying it so far but i think the time has come to upgrade to clipless pedals and shoes but unfortunately i know nothing about which would suit a beginner. any help greatly appreciated. budget of around 150 for shoes and pedals if its possible

You'd get a serious set for that sort of money!

I got these shoes and these pedals for just over €100 delivered with a voucher code, and they're a cut above entry level and very comfy. My housemate got the same ones and he loves them.

Never tried look pedals, but the general consensus when I asked was that shimano pedals have a larger platform, and would be more comfortable over longer distances, and had more durable cleats, where the look pedals were more durable.

Hope this has helped you somewhat.

I have look on one bike and shimano on the other. Shimano set is wider. I think I prefer the look though.

I prefer the Shimanos as they're wider and felt like a more solid platform.
