Hi,I was wondering if anyone knows if the Gardai always contact your references and do they always come to your home to check your safe/security.Reason for asking is,I applied for a .22 rile (my first)over 10 week ago now and my referees have not been contacted nor have they checked the safe etc.Maybe it's a stupid question but would appreciate some advice.Thanks.

If he has it then all the checks have been done and the fo will have made his recomendations, once he has it they usually go quick enough

1st gun nothing, 2nd gun nothing, 3rd gun came out to check the safe, 2 seconds in and out and license came 3 days later

Cool,so the possibility of a house call or referance check is highly unlikely, just wanted to know because I was they only start the process when the safe is checked and referances are contacted.

What i always do if i'm waiting is i ring the district office and ask to talk to the secretary who deals with the firearms, The lady in my station is lovely always sorts it out as quick as possible. And from what others have said it's the same in most places. So that would be the advice i would give to you, Give her/him a call and ask her dose she/he know what is going on with your application etc.. My mate did the same and she had a look on the supers desk for his application to see if it was there and she kindly left it on the top of the pile had his grant letter two days later.

I called up 2 weeks ago, didn't want to annoy her so I asked politely does she require any additional info as they requested this after the first 2 weeks, she told me "No,I have sent it to the Superintendent,he will be in tomorrow and I can't comment any further on this application".

My local FO called to my house one night with a letter wrote to get it signed by my mother since it was her house, I was up in college at the time but she told him the safe had just arrived and showed it to him still in the box, he asked were the walls solid or partition and he was happy.

I presume that call will do as an inspection.

Dont know anyone in the area that ever got an inspection. Some have 3 guns for 20 odd years or more.

ye i hear its the new supers policy for an inspection and the fo said she needs to see the trigger lock as well.how long does it take the fo to process it or does it depend on there own productivity as a public servent

Two licences no visits or contacts made with referees. Also been referee twice never been contacted. First licence 11 days beginning to end, second licence 9 days. Thought they were supposed to be slow in Roscommon.

Thanks for the info,I'm 30 years old and bought my own place in Kildare 7 years ago, also never been in trouble with the law so hopefully there will be no issues.

One of my referees was contacted about my pistol licence. I've been contacted both times I've stood as a referee for people getting licences in Dublin. And my FO did want to inspect my gunsafe but at the time I didn't have one (the firearms were stored at my club), so he took a letter from the club certifying they were stored there instead (from the club RFD whose lockup they were in). So it's not highly unlikely that this stuff gets checked - it's just that it's too much work to check everything with the manpower the Gardai have available.

I didn't have my safe checked or my referees contacted. I know another person in the district and it was the same for them. Super and FO here are a shooter's dream..ya don't hear that often:pac:

It's highly likely that your local Garda has made a few discreet enquiries and has had a look at a few things and has decided that there's no need to make more formal enquiries in your case and he/she is satisfied your application can be forwarded to the super without any further fuss.
