    Hi,

I have a question, if anyone can help.
I am about to finish college in June-I am the youngest in my family.
My mother is 63, she is legally separated, and she has no pension until she turns 65. Her lone parent benefit will stop when I am finished college.

My father has never made any contributions to the family, and the question I have -is there anything available for her from now until she turns 65, or is it just the job seekers allowance?

She has never worked, as she reared us by herself, and I did enquire in the revenue office about what options are available, but they wouldn't disclose this information.

We just want general information, if anyone can help, that would be great, I cannot find any information on this on-line.
    thanks

In fairness the revenue wouldn't be in a position to advise on this matter - if your mum won't pursue your father then the only available option, as far as I know, is JSA.
Is that not ok with her?

i'm only looking for advice, to see if there's any other alternatives-of course if will be fine if needs be. Seeing as she hasn't worked in years as she reared her kids, I don't know if she is even eligible for this. I am trying to find out any information there might be on this.

There was a pre retirement allowance in place for this type of situation for people that are not qualified in anything, but this is now abolished.

Your mum would be entitled to do a FAS course or a CE scheme as well. She has to be 66 to get her non contributary pension. A CE scheme may be her best bet as these can be up to 3 years, which will not only take her up to retirement age, but also only 19.5 hours a week.

    As the other poster said:

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/unemployment_and_redundancy/employment_support_schemes/community_employment_scheme.html

This option is designed to give extended access to employment to older people who may have been unable to secure regular employment for some time. The participation limits for people on one of the specified disability payments (see below) are 7 years for those aged 55 to 65 and 4 years for those aged 35 to 54. Time spent on CE before 3 April 2000 is not counted in these participation limits.
You may qualify for participation in the CE Part-Time Job Option if:
