Claiming Tax Back on Pension Contributions and Pension Levy Payments

Hi, just have a quick query.

I worked in the public sector for approximately 2 years between 2009 and 2011 (I lost my job in September 2011)

When I became unemployed, I applied for Jobseeker’s Benefit and have been receiving that since September 2011 (unfortunately, I am still unemployed). I waited 8 weeks and applied for a tax repayment during unemployment using a form P50, which I received in November 2011 and then, as instructed, waited a further 8 weeks before making a further tax repayment during unemployment claim in January 2012, which I received in January 2012.

I was, however, also due payment from my previous employer, namely my pension contributions and my public sector pension levy payments (PRDs) – as my contract ended before 2 full years of service. I received these payments in late December 2011, less tax of 20% on my pension contributions and approximately 43% on my public sector pension levy payments (PRDs) – in total tax of approx. €2,900.

I was just wondering, can I claim back the tax stopped on my pension contributions and on my PRDs and if so how should I go about doing this (do I claim through PAYE)

    Thanks for any advice.
